Made a meal of getting here and getting back out of the woods. Parked on the road about two hundred and fifty metres east of a school opposite a path heading north beside some allotments. Expecting a fairly straightforward find as map I was using indicated the path ran north then north east. However, as is often the case, there are lots of tracks through the woods. Foliage was quite dense so it was difficult to gauge directions from the position of the sun and difficult to see through the trees to any high ground. Tried a couple of high points without any luck. Continued east, roughly, and met a dog walker who said they were familiar with the woods but when I asked if they knew where the TP was they couldn’t help. Wondered if still existed. So checked on here, it does. Continued a bit further east then spotted a rocky out crop to north east. Looking a bit more promising. Scramble up to highest point. Found it. Painted white. Spider and cap in place. Views limited by vegetation all around. Way out to original pathway in was very long winded as no obvious main track.

Pillar all good and still retains its original centre cap. Pillar history: Built on the 19th of November 1936, at a cost of £4 19s 0d. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1978.

An easy bag. Park in the parking area and walk west. Eventually you find the the ground rising to your left. Follow vague paths up and you appear into a small clearing with the pillar just off centre. The pillar is on another outcrop of Charnian Pre-Cambrian igneous rocks which represent the highest parts of a landscape buried in much younger Triassic sedimentary rocks. This is my third of the Charnwood trigpoints. One to go, plus the Markfield pillar. Views are limited in summer as the birch trees have nearly obscured the view. Winter would provide a better opportunity to take in the views.

Squeezing into the woods off one of the sideroads, the entrance isn't terribly visible. The woods are very pleasant to walk around at this time of year, although covered in ferns and twisting pathways. Approaching from the East requires a little bit of agility climbing up the rocks, the western approach looked easier, but i didn't go down there on account of spending too much time looking for my bike, which i left in the woods and then couldn't find again! The trig itself is intact and in good condition, except that the area seems to be a local drinking-venue for kids or something, and the poor thing is painted some odd colours and has a fair bit of graffiti and broken glass around it :(

View from one side of the trig The trigpoint atop its rocky seat. Unfortunately you can't really see much in any direction for all the trees in the way. You can see some of the white paint on the left of the trig, and a closer look (in real life) shows all the little signatures of the local kids :(
View from other side of trig The view from the other side, here you can see the unsightly red paint. Does red paint mean something, because i can't imagine why someone would want to lug a can of it up a hill, and pour it there :\ Again, you still can't really see much of the surrounding landscape
