A short stroll up to the Tennyson Monument from the car park at the end of Highdown Lane. There's no pillar to be found here as others have mentioned, but worth the trip for the amazing views and stroll along the path to the needles. UPDATE: I've been in contact with OS, this pillar was removed in June 1995 and there are no plans to replace it. Maps will be updated to remove it at next revision.

On walk from Freshwater Bay to Tennyson Monument. Saw the National Trust 'pillar' but had no idea there was ever an OS pillar here! Looking retrospectively at my photos (May 2013) I can see something that looks like the truncated base of a pillar beside the stone-built NT one, HOWEVER the co-ordinates put the original OS pillar some 5m NE of here - which makes me think that Blackjack's 1984 photo may not be of the OS pillar at all. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1535353 (taken 28/5/1983) is almost exactly the same angle as Blackjack's photograph 14 months later but shows whatever is there to be 'domed' on the top. Possible further details (if I can find any) to follow...

No trace: NT collecting box too short to be a stone-cladded trig. Its base has 2 pieces of bent-over reinforcing bar but circular in section: trig re-bars I've seen have always been angle iron, but couldn't rule out this being the old trig base. 20m to north of meml, as per jochta's log, is pristine grassland nowadays. Fine location though. Searched inside scrub then walked back along its edge but no corpse spotted. FB S2509 from SO, added to update the database.
