The upgrade to the A30 made this a bit tricky. Suggest you visit when no work is happening. Parked near the service station at Carland Cross. Walked up the now closed section of the A30, which is an access road for the construction site, for 400m . Then into an empty site yard. Fortunately the gate was open. Hopped over a barbed wire fence into a field. 100m south to the trig which was on a plinth, set on a stone wall. Barbed wire fence on both sides of the wall but fortunately an earlier visitor had lowered the fence next to the trig. watch your footing on the wall. I ended up falling into a patch of brambles and nettles. Decent view south . Not sure about access when the new A30 is opened later in the year.

Driving from the west along the A30, being upgraded at the time and no right hand turn permitted where I had planned to get to the south of the pillar. Driving over the high point of the road pillar was visible to the south but there was nowhere to stop. Parked at the service station at Carland Cross. Walked back west along the verge of the main road. Pretty grim. Reached the works compound on the south of the road but fencing was unsecured so could get through to the field without too much trouble, a low barbed wire fence was loose. Along edge of daffodil field. Going past their best but still plenty of colour. Pillar on plinth on west edge of field about 150 metres south of the main road. Cap plugged with concrete. Good views across farmland. Daffodils looked good.

The pillar stands on a large concrete plinth at the junction of two hedging banks; its spider is painted white, it has a blank metal cap and FB S 8050. I chose a particularly silly access route of crossing the A30 from the eastbound layby and forcing my way through the bracken, heather and gorse to reach the trig. One of the neighbouring fields was arable; the other was being grazed by some inquisitive cattle. The view from the pillar takes in a swathe of the surrounding countryside, Carland Cross Wind Farm is nearby to the north with Newquay in the distance; the hills of spoil from the China Clay workings were in the mist to the east; greener hills lie in other directions, wind farms could be seen in the distance in the northeast and to the southwest; St Agnes Beacon was prominent in the west.
