En-route home after Scilly week. Approached this trig from completely the wrong direction and have some serious bramble wounds to testify you don't do it this way - across the gorse and bramble! Good access is from the 149m spot height (Carland Cross Hill, a tump), along field boundary to trig, high on a bank at junction of fences. Pillar in good condition on an over-sized plinth. Cap missing, composite plug; rear and RHD side sight holes open. Extensive near all round views, slightly limited to W by deciduous plantation.

The pillar stands on a large concrete plinth at the junction of two hedging banks; its spider is painted white, it has a blank metal cap and FB S 8050. I chose a particularly silly access route of crossing the A30 from the eastbound layby and forcing my way through the bracken, heather and gorse to reach the trig. One of the neighbouring fields was arable; the other was being grazed by some inquisitive cattle. The view from the pillar takes in a swathe of the surrounding countryside, Carland Cross Wind Farm is nearby to the north with Newquay in the distance; the hills of spoil from the China Clay workings were in the mist to the east; greener hills lie in other directions, wind farms could be seen in the distance in the northeast and to the southwest; St Agnes Beacon was prominent in the west.

I can't undertand why other visitors think this is a tricky pillar to get to. Immediately after the Carland Cross roundabout going west there is a gateway which you can pull into (be careful not to miss it!). You can then open the gate and walk acros the pasture to the trig which is on the top of the hedgebank next to the disused quarry. Decent views, resin type plug.

Yep, trickier than it looks. Thanks to 'Nr' for the tip. Park in the layby on the eastbound carriageway and enter the copse through the old gate on its NW corner. Make your way thro' it skirting the old quarry pool to the N then just plod thro' the heather and gorse. I flushed out the biggest dog fox I've ever seen on the way over and the views are worth it.
