Pillar stands proud and tall (thanks to its exposed base) in the middle of a field beside The Ridgeway. Crop was just starting to appear in the field, but at time of visit the plants were small enough that I could cross to the pillar without treading on any of them. A couple of weeks later, and I probably wouldn't have made the attempt. Oh, and the field edge has no fence, but it does have a ditch that needs jumping. It's easier to jump into the field than out of it. Views from here are absolutely incredible.

A days walking with a friend I hadn't seen for far too long. This is now Fran's part of the world, and she knew I'd be keen to bag White Horse Hill - she hadn't reckoned on me adding a couple of miles each way to the walk so I could bag this one too... We parked by the tumulus to the SE and headed NW along the Ridgeway until I crossed the harvested field to reach the TP (Fran deciding this one was best left to me, the dog and my obsessions). I did however enjoy the company of a Red Kite which circled above us as me and the dog approached the TP. Beautiful weather meant for great views. Rejoined Fran and carried on along the Ridgeway to White Horse Hill, and then further to the long barrow 'Wayland's Smithy'. A really enjoyable walk.

We parked at the car park where the Ridgeway crosses the B4001 (to the SE of the trig point), then walked NW up the Ridgeway. The trig point was in the middle of a large field full of crops about 2 feet high. It ended up being a real kerfuffle walking down one tractor track after another, trying to find the trig point, but eventually we found it. Trig point was in good condition, centre cap missing, concrete base completely exposed. Great views from there, but we were concerned about being in the crops, so we got out of there sharpish. It was completely the wrong way to find it, so let me detail here how to do it the easy way: Walk NW up the Ridgeway until you pass the tarmac road that leads SW to Hill Barn. Keep walking NW up the Ridgeway until you pass a water trough and tap on your left. A plaque set on a stone says that the tap was placed in memory of Peter Wren aged 14 years. From the water trough, walk the Ridgeway to the first (and only solitary) tree in front of you. From this point, look N and you will be able to see the trig point. The barbed wire fence is down in this area next to the tree. Walk into the field (cross some crops) and then walk along the tractor tracks to the trig point. Tips for future visitors: beware when crossing the B4001, the cars come flying round that bend! Also if there are crops (depending on season / harvest), wear long boots and / or long trousers, do not wear shorts & trainers! 10 out of 10 for the stunning views, my favourite of all the trigs that I've visited! *** Revisited 25 September 2017 with Mrs 21qazxsw "Lady Kelly".
