'A trig pillock' s day' Trig pillar in tricky place possibly buried in bramble high on an embankment above a railway. Rather difficult. Looked in Trigpointinguk. com's posts at Griefmiester 2012 and Carol Engel's copy posts and planned to try same idea risking a trespass walking along the railway line then up the very steep embankment. However, a four/five foot high newish looking green steel fence between footpath and railway with spiked tops didn't look easily scalable by me and thought I'd investigate something easier. So I returned to the footbridge across the railway near where the pillar is, to seek solution and see if it was visible. Decided to knock on door of 137 Birchy Barton Hill right next to it and ask there for permission to go in their back garden and even tell them what I wanted to do and ask if they had a steep ladder they might consider lending me. Fine to go down garden but sorry no step ladder. Good fairly close view of trig on top of embankment just about ten feet away. Clear that the other garden end of terrace on the main road of the estate the fence I needed to cross is at back of their garden. Best option to get close photos. So I go round there. Great irony house on the other road Thornpark Rise is also numbered 137. What an amazing coincidence two gardens both number 137 on two different roads both abutting the pillar. also delicious for this number geek to learn it's a prime number. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/137_(number) Lady came to door in motorised scooter, Same patter,. "Hello, my names Charles. I've got a rather strange request. I'd like some help with. Don't know if you know the Ordnance survey who make maps. They've got a triangulation pillar behind the fence at the back of your garden and I wondered if I could have permission to go to it and even wondered if there was any way you might be able to help me further. I'm trying to borrow a step ladder to get over the fence to see the condition and take some photos. "Don't think I've got a step ladder but suppose my husband might have one. If you go round the back I'll look on the shed." Round the back the gate is locked and the lady says, "Go round the front and come back through the kitchen" Initially I wait for her then realising she's on this motorised scooter thing assume she means me to come straight through so open the front door and walk through to the back. She's there in the garden and there's a very slight slope that's mossy and her scooter is slipping so she needs help and I have to help her back up on to the flatter concrete patio area. Shed's locked. "There's a lot of keys on the windowsill in kitchen if you'd go and get it." Grateful she's being so trusting of this enthusiastic nerdy stranger. In the shed is a small 4 step ladder. I have to straddle a wooden fence to get into the back area next to the railway fence but fortunately in the corner there's a block of something about foot high I can stand on and I lift the little step ladder over the outside of the railway line embankment fence and it's just possible to lift a leg over and on to the top of the step ladder. Eureka. Quick scan of the mossy pillar. Photos taken and back over railway fence. By this time, protective neighbour at 135 is there to check out that her neighbour is okay and check me out. "Are you from the council?" she asks. "No, I'm just an enthusiast checking the condition of these things. Your neighbour has been so extremely helpful," I gush, with enthusiastic gratitude. She unlocks the other door and ushers me out and back round to the front clearly not sure what to make of me, but reasonably happy looking that I'm kosher and not up to no good. Job done. I reiterate my profound thank you and say goodbye and thank you to Stella at the second number 137. .

Followed "greifmeister"s advice. Walked along railway line with heart thumping. Crossed line and hauled myself up heavily brambled bank wearing old waterproofs and heavy duty gardening gloves. Children on railway bridge very interested in my antics and eventually replaced by man who possibly thought i was trying to do myself some harm. Thankfully trig relatively easy to find and this is the only access. No time to clear vegetation as dreading the sound of sirens. Uneventful walk back along railway and quick escape in car.

Don't bother with this one unless you're obsessed! (Guilty as charged) - there is a footpath between the houses to the west of the pillar, where you can access the railway line (look out for trains) I then walked along the edge of the track (non electric) and scrambled up the bank which is very steep and very brambled, pillar is easy once you get to top of embankment. Good condition, crap area and views. Updated 24/03/2012 - I have got so many scrathes on my legs! :)
