A beautiful, warm day. Very hazy; impossible to identify landmarks across the Brede valley at just 2km distant.

About 200 metres west of the village next to the ruins of a windmill, a view point sign and a beacon. Great views to the west although a little misty at the time. Extra points for views and history of the town itself. Starting point for walk to Blackland Wood but too dark to get decent photograph so pictured on return.

Pleasant spot overlooking low-lying ground to the west. Boundary stone, fire basket beacon, remains of an old stone bldg (windmill?). Plenty here. Pillar retains an original centre cap, deeply indented lettering; rear sight hole open. Very pastoral. Picked up a handful of benchmarks nearby.

Parked in Winchelsea and walked out along part of the 1066 Country Walk to the site of the Post Mill and the Trigpoint.

Parked near the New Inn and walked the 425 metres to the pillar. Great views all around on this very clear day. Pillar was brilliant white on our last 'proper' visit nearly ten years ago, we have noticed gradual deterioration since then on numerous 'drive-bys'. On return to Winchelsea we spotted a very well-defined cut bench mark on the corner of Herys House, facing the main A259.

Easy to spot the white painted pillar from the nearby road. There used to be a windmill alongside it until it blew down in the 1987 "hurricane". Good views to the northwest. Plug intact.

A white painted pillar adjacent to a fire beacon in an open field by Winchelsea. Original plug with deeply indented letters. N sighthole open, others closed. Concrete base exposed at grass level. Lovely views all round to sea in S and over Sussex countryside N/E/W; good spot!

A short walk from the centre of Winchelsea. East Sussex at its best !

The beacon, the ruins of the St. Leonard's Mill and the trigpoint

Nice and clean !


The contrast here makes the pillar looks like it has been 'energised' by a force within ! That's the town of Rye on the distant horizon above the trig.

Interesting place this, on the site of an old widmill, that was destroyed in the 1987 hurrican, nothing left but a few bricks and the mill stones. Pillar has been painted white, and is in good condition

Located on the site of an old windmill on the west side of the town. It would have been a great place to visit and enjoy the view if it hadn't been raining. The pillar is obviously well cared for by the locals.

Located on the site of St. Leonards windmill which was built in 1703 on the site of the ancient Saxon Church of St. Leonards but was blown down in the 1987 storm. Excellent condition with good coat of white paint! View to the West shows the remains of the windmill plus a torch beacon
