A "slight" detour to pick up the top of Renfrewshire (not Strathclyde!), Arran gleams dark on the horizon with extravagant views to the centre and west of Scotland and Glasgow. Remorseless cheerless walk in parts - needs trees!

Tucked into a bag of Hobgoblin spit roasted steak crisps up here on Hill of Stake as a little treat for reaching 500 HuMPs. Walked in from the west over Burnt Hill and through the bogs and was certainly quite glad when I eventually reached the trig.

I'm sure the approach walk has some redeeming feature, but at present I can't bring it to mind. Still, a historic county top and a geocache do give it triple whammy status!

Parked at the end car park in Muirshiel Country Park then took the track towards the mine to cross the River Calder at the second bridge where I then headed directly for Misty Law which involved a steep crossing of the Rathy Burn. Then onto East Girt Hill, contoured around HoS to West Girt Hill before having a break at Hill of Stake where there was a lovely cooling breeze on a very warm sunny day. A direct return route to the bridge via an easier/higher crossing of the Rathy Burn then on to bag the pretty Craig Minnan before returning to the car, a bit hot and dehydrated.

Climbed steep slope opposite, intially following fenceline and keeping a near straight line southeast until NS256542 then bearing SW to summit of Burnt Hill. Continued on a random but near direct route to Hill of Stake summit following an unmapped fence towards the top. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open, cap presumed stolen. Flush bracket faces north, ~349. Vented through south sight hole. Full 360 panoramic view from top.

Good condition pillar with minor damage to the top screed. Stands on the highest point of the North Ayrshire hills. FB faces north-ish, with the south-ish sighthole open only. The cap is present with raised lettering. Expansive views on a nice day and good intervisibility to the other two trigs on the same range. Approached from the mine track leading from Clyde Muirshiel visitors centre. Very boggy with sphagnum moss or peat hags or dry but knee-high springy heather. Quite hard work!
