Graham No.7. A long walk from Edzell via the Lethnot Road and bulldozed tracks. Last part crossing over clumpy heather and a double fence at the pillar. Pillar in good condition although the base is eroded and virtually an island in the surrounding puddles. Views were excellent on a clear morning, from the snow-capped Lochnagar and Cairngorms, all the way south over Angus to Fife, with the border hills a smudge on the horizon.

Walked up the track from the Drumcairn area; parked at NO 538683, near a small bridge. Up by way of Craig of Finnoch and Shank of Ledmanie, and then a mucky, boggy plod to the summit. The pillar has regained its cap - stamped lettering, with all sight-holes open. No views for me today as a dense mist descended as I approached the top. On way down and heading in a southerly direction, I stumbled (literally) across a grey panel (about 4' long, and 2' wide) presumably a piece of that aircraft which crashed on 17th October 1944. All was misty with very poor visibility, so it was a wonder I discovered it at all. Very poignant. I then turned eastwards heading for the East Wirren trigpoint.

We left the car close to Lethnot Primary School and followed the tracks almost all the way to the top. Our main objectives for the hike up the Hill of Wirren were the aircraft wreckage and the geocache, but its always good to visit a trig pillar. Although the ground is rather boggy around it, the pillar is still upright. I tried out the averaging function on my new GPS, so my waypoint is the result of 30 minutes data whilst we had lunch.
