Started from Ye Olde Mustard Pot pub and headed north and onto the Upper Don Trail. Continued easterly, crossing the A616 a couple of times along various paths until heading up a steep hill. There is a cross near the trig which is visible from the bottom. Lovely views on a beautiful day. However the surrounding area is a bit disappointing, old farm machinery left to rust and generally untidy looking. Carried on east and eventually back down to the A616. Next stop, Whitwell Moor.

It offered views of Stocksbridge and the relatively new Fox Valley shopping centre. There was a slightly better view looking along the valley towards Hillsborough. At the time of my visit it was windy and on reaching the pillar I was exposed to its full force blowing from the Sheffield side where it was stirring up a 'right old hoolie '!The pillar was in good condition with the land slightly built up around the base to the bottom edge of the FB.
