Death of a Trig Point. From Balbirnie Park, good parking in S carpark off B9130. Along FPW turning off towards Dalginch Farm. Over gate after farm and straight to Dalginch trig. Back same way and S back to FPW. Up past Newton Hall and Burnside to do a beautiful circuit of Donald Rose Reservoir. N past Ballinkirk, through Milldeans Wood and Kirkforthar Wood. S on track past Cardsknolls and up stubble field before housing. Found recumbent Hilton trig in dump near its original position. FB still visible. Continued past Star Moss and over Cuinin Hill on good paths back to Balbirnie Park. 25km of beautiful countryside on cold, frosty day.

Came to look for this one a decade or so ago, but crops prevented getting closer than the road. Field ploughed into narrow drills today, crop not yet visible. The pillar has been moved from nr the top of the hill to beside the small pond marked on the 1:25k. Intact and in near perfect condition, but lying on its side with the FB facing south. Met the local again on the way down, very civil. Edit: Found my record from 11/08/2011: Couldn't get at it. A very helpful elderly gentleman in the drive provided a detailed description of how to spot the pillar sticking up above the corn from the corner of the track. The houses marked on the map on the way up are all ruins now.

All quiet in the tiny settlement of Hilton Forthar - no inquisitive farmer around today. Fortunately, the trig-containing field had nothing planted there, so it was an easy plod over the frosty and icy stubbles of the bygone harvest. Cap remains in place with shallow lettering, two s/h's open, one closed, and one hidden. Beautiful sunny winter's day with the frost glittering.
