(3638) Struck lucky by getting the last parking spot at the top of Rosedale Lane. Great views from this location. Easy walk along PRoW. Then a short deviation from this to the pillar. Hinderwell ROC Post (Opened in 1960 and closed in 1991) located nearby. Pillar in very good condition, but getting engulfed by gorse. All metalwork present and correct - centre cap with indented lettering. Saw a Deer darting across the field when walking back to my car. Pillar history: Built on the 24th of October 1947, at a cost of £5 13s 6d. Last maintained by the OS in April of 1981.

We parked up in a small lay-by at the very end of the lane through Port Mulgrave. You can clearly see the objective from here - a gorse-covered mound on the nearest high ground away over farmland. We took the ROW through the field next to the last house along the lane - this field was scrub and overgrown grass. As you come up the rise, there is an obvious worn path heading along the far field edge towards the trig. The path heads upwards into the next field via an incomplete fence, and leads to the tumulus. The pillar sits unusually sunken in the landscape, perhaps the construction of the adjacent ROC bunker (now very securely sealed up) raised the land around the trig? The gorse looks to have been recently trimmed. The pillar itself is in superb condition with a full set of metalwork; the views are absolutely magnificent to the north and out to sea. We visited at sunset, it was beautiful. You're not visible from any house or farm until you stand on top of the tumulus, and you're only off the ROW for a couple of minutes so this is fairly straightforward to visit - and highly recommended. Pillar #76 for DD, and down to two NYMNP pillars for me.

Had a blond senior moment and drove straight past Easington trig to this one! Trig in a field of corn although its little spot is covered with gorse so easy to find. Just off the public footpath but nice tractor lines to follow to avoid crop damage. Views out to sea...shame it was so grey...matching the sky.
