Walked from Puttenham along bridle path which climbs diagonally up the the Hog’s Back in a north westerly direction. Then no alternative but to walk beside the busy main road for about 800 metres. The verge is mostly quite wide but the disgusting amount of litter is a bit depressing. The pillar is well hidden in the hedge which was thickly grown with prickly vegetation. Located just past a police patrol lay-by. Views obscured by vegetation but pushed through to get fantastic views to south. London was visible from the road through gaps in trees on the central reservation. Marked down for for busy roadside location but compensated by great views nearby and a good scuff and scramble to get to the FB which faces south, by the way. Oddly a golf ball on the top. Good luck with this in the summer.

Parked on verge at junction to New Barn cottages, on the Hampton Estate. Met the estate manager whilst walking the track. He gave permission to enter field ,but be aware of the ‘keen ‘ new gamekeeper! He's usually around about 2pm ,we had plenty of time! Walked up steps to cottages .then entered the steep field walking up to the hedge by the busy A31 .

Same route as Carol. Parked on verge on Puttenham Road opposite access track to trig SU911477.Then walked up track and then steps to New Barn Cottages, two guys sitting having a cuppa in the garden gladly gave me permission to walk through the field above to the trigpoint, quite steep! Trig still not that easy to get to from this side, broke off some of the spikey bush with gardening gloves but then had to crawl in for a hug, could do with some gardening.

I had tried to find this pillar last year without success. On that occasion I had climbed across two fields from the lane to the South. This time I climbed to the A31 from Ash Green and braved the main road traffic for the 1km Eastbound (not too bad). At the reservoir there was a level, crash barrier free, crossing with care and patience. The road side hedge is now more of a thin wood. I walked both sides twice for some distance before finally catching sight of the pillar well concealed in the middle. I was able to reach it by pushing a few branches aside and nearly crawling in from the field side. Cycling out was easier as there is a narrow tarred pavement beside the Westbound carriageway back to the Ash Green turn, which remarkably is an allowed right-hand turn for motor vehicles. For future visitors: there are a couple of unofficial gravel laybys near the A31 junction on the road from Ash Green then cross A31 and walk pavement, or there seemed to be a footpath up from the end of the cul-de-sac road from Seale. Alongside a length of roadside crash barrier there is a wire stayed telephone pole with an easy gap into the adjacent field. Turn right and through a vehicle gap in the hedge running up the hill to the road. From the far side of this hedge it is about 80 paces to the pillar on your right.

Parking at Puttenham Rd junc, walked N on access track until it veered E, then NW over wild flower meadow to trig. Not an easy find and no gardening tools with me, so sustained lot of scrathes and stings to access. Previous logger's clearance helped a little but lot of vegetation regrown. Visible from A31, but only accessible from field side. Pillar in good condition; original cap in place, lightly indented lettering. Good views S, nothing N due to high hedgerow.

On my list of 'looks difficult and dull, but has to be done in order to complete LR186' trigs. In practice, exceeded expectations as a) fine southern panorama, and b) if you don't mind an 80m ascent, access from S is much easier: easy parking at junction of Puttenham Rd and track, much nearer than layby and avoids the A31 death wish, and you end up on the right side of the hedge. Have pruned a way through if you go soon, otherwise take appropriate tools! Metal cap, shallow letters, N s/hole open, otherwise vgc. PS to demonstrate the slow rate of plastic breakdown, the blue bag in Griefmiester's photo is still there exactly as he saw it.

Decided to do this one the hard way! Climbed up the Hog's Back from the south during a circular Puttenham walk. As I reached pillar s5829 I spotted a red Norbert Dentressangle lorry rushing past on the other side of the hedge. So exciting! Jane Austen knew the Hog's Back and on 20th May 1813 wrote to her sister Cassandra that 'I never saw country from the Hog's Back so advantageously'. Me too! The Hog's Back also gets a mention in Richard Thompson's song: MGB-GT.

As others, I have driven past this so many time - I just wish I had stopped during the winter when I could actually see it. Parked in the entrance to the reservoir (Eastbound), crossed the road and spent a while peering into the hedge where I knew it to be. Finally saw it and got a vague photo, but could not get anywhere near it to see its condition or flush bracket, so I have just agreed with others on those! Me 148m

It is in there, honestly! If you look carefully enough, you can just make out the edge of the pillar in the hedge

Pillar in in good condition and is best viewed from the non-road side, good views to south, hasy today.

I have driven past this trig hindreds of times but this is the first time I've looked for it. I parked on the east bound carriageway in front of a couple of cottages near the reservoir shown on the 1:25,000 map. I managed to cross the road without being marmalised and walked back about a hundred yards to the trig, which as Sagi says is well inside a blackthorn hedge. It is more easily seen from the field side and the FB faces south. Plug with indented lettering.
