A stunning pillar in a bizarre location. I parked up next to the metal gate on Withens Road, with wonderful views of Warley Moor Reservoir. Nipping under the gate, it is immediately apparent that there has been terrible damage done here by off-roaders/bikers - the ground is ruined. The authorities have tried to block access throughout by placing boulders and rubble across all the old quarry paths. It makes for an apocalyptic vista - as others have mentioned, when you get up the gradient and come up on the windfarm along with the quarried and damaged tracks, it's like a martian landscape. The trig is immediately visible as you gain height, gleaming white behind a backdrop of huge wind turbines. It sits on a brick plinth, with two cairns for company. It is in good condition but has some light spalling and a replacement cap. There are a pair of quite touching memorial plaques attached. The views are sumptuous. A cracking pillar to visit, mainly for the strange location.

(2446) Cold Edge Road for parking. Barbed wire topped fence in place, but a (newer?) gateway a little further along was just the ticket for access. Peat moorland - churned up and heavily rutted in places - but decent enough going overall. Any boggy spots was easily circumvented as well. Pillar sits on a summit with two cairns for company. A lovely slightly other-worldly location offering up some pretty decent views - wind farm included. Pillar, adorned with two memorial plaques, is in good condition - over painted metalwork, and non original centre cap aside. The only real fly in the ointment, as others have noted, is the damage caused by off roaders and the not inconsiderable fly tipping the immediate area seems to attract. Pillar history: Pillar history: Built on the 11th of March 1948, at a cost of £13 8s 6d. Original FB was S4408. Pillar vandalised and subsequently rebuilt in 1972 and given a replacement FB of 11178. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1986.

Parked on Cold Edge Road. Took the public right of way (PRoW) to the north of the pillar. The PRoW is in an appalling condition - a mud bath which has been completely churned up by motorbikes. Then walked south from the PRoW up to the pillar over some very rough and boggy ground, again very badly damaged by motorbikes. This pillar replaced a previous one, which used to be around a foot to the north west of the current one.

vgc, dazzling white, plastic cap, plaque to Robert Robinson. Compact cairned summit with quarrying within 100m to W. Cold bleak drizzly early a.m., quick bag from S. Quarry track covered in deep slurry, avoided it on descent. Replaced earlier pillar S4408.

Fenced off, - presumably because of the quarry workings - although its easy enough to straddle the fence. Fairly recently painted. As mentioned below its next to the wind turbine farm which seem to be loved or hated to the same degree. Nice remeberance plaque (like the photo John). Revisited 15/04/2007 - it would seem the dirt bikers have been doing their stuff in the quarry and an attempt has been made to prevent them from gaining access from the road by large metal gates and fencing off and filling in a track access, so what do they do - well just come across the tracks to the wind turbines, wreck the fence and away they go - personally Id be more than happy to see them doing their stuff in an old quarry rather than trashing a bridleway or footpath somewhere. Revisited mainly to get some decent photos of the trig (the first lot were rubbish).

A good place to be on a crisp sunny morning. Views extend up into the Yorkshire Dales. Very close to the Ovenden Moor Windfarm and the Halifax Sailing Club at Warley Moor Reservoir (known locally as Fly Flats). There is a nice rememberence plaque to a departed Yorkshireman - it makes you think!
