At 582 metres, Black Hill was once the county top of Cheshire prior to the 1974 boundary changes (forming part of what was then known as the Cheshire Panhandle). Since the boundary changes, it is now the highest point in West Yorkshire

A superb walk along the Pennine Way from Crowden spoilt only by sound of clay pigeon shooting across Longendale and jet roar overhead of planes on approach to Manchester Airport. I generally prefer the White Peak but would highly recommend this area of the Dark Peak. Just don't venture this way in high wind, icy conditions or poor visibility because the path is perilously close to the cliff edge in places. The pillar is leaning somewhat and is starting to crack on the top hence recorded as slightly damaged. Scenery from here not as good as on the route up - just featureless moorland. Had intended to return via PROW across Westend Moss to take in the pillar at Hey Edge but the ground was waterlogged and I'm not a fan of bog hopping at the best of times. Will have to visit this one another day direct from Crowden.

Now tamed by a paved track, the peat morass is showing signs of recovery, so it is better for the hill I suppose, but something of the challenge is now gone forever. Still, this is the highest bit of land you can see from where i live and will always be special for the years of looking up to it from afar. Now completed again on a long hike with friends so cool. Like The Cheviot, notorious for peat.. Once struggled through the bog only to beable to return easily as the peat had frozen while I was at the pillar. Now tamed by slabs I believe. The number is a 29xx..I have no log of the number, but a lot of the 29xx plates are without the "S" A long survey history , the soldiers who lumped it were OS soldiers. Cheshire county top.

Overcast and very misty. The Pennine Way (which I'm following) was soggy but generally good underfoot up to the Soldiers Lump trig which is found in the centre of some squelchier peat. Trig is approx a yard in the air on supporting rocks. The Pennine Way heading north-west from the trig is a walk you can only recommend to your worst enemy.

Black Hill is a much misunderstood and reviled peak, largely because (a) the PW takes the worst possible line over it and (b) Wainwright got stuck in a bog here and never forgave it! Try the route from the car park by the transmitter to the summit. A superb short walk with a touch of compass work to spice it and, if you're on track, an aircraft crash site.
