Holyhead mountain is master of all it surveys and has a lot going for it with its summit tower topped by trig converted into a toposcope and building ruins. We travelled up from the RSPB reserve (first puffins arrived last week) which was nice and easy but spoilt by the man made accoutrements.

Think all the Welsh weather has been too much for me, just starting on an evil cold, still make it to county top of what legislatively is classed as Yns Mon (with an accent on the o) (not Gwynedd in the past and nor is it now!). A cool but beautifully sunny day, walk all the way round from South towards North Landing, choughs and herring gulls for company. A confusing and wild space, despite the flatness and towns so near by got a trace of the Ardgour in it's tricksy igneous gleam.

Walked up from the Country Park Info Centre. Grim day compared with yesterday's fantastic visibility. Followed broken paths over Monian Complex of metamorphosed arenites - gives a white quartzite. Thin soils have developed over the impermeable bedrock to provide a short heath vegetation. Painted toposcope silhouettes on each face of the pillar. With views this must be a fantastic point - sadly not today. Not the highest point on Anglesey, as noted below by Oddhikingsocks, but on Holy Island.

From there it was a relatively easy climb to the summit; a bit rough and rocky in places but nothing too demanding. The weather played ball today with sunshine and blue skies. The views were excellent although it was a little hazy in the distance. The pillar is in generally good condition with all its metalwork intact even if the top edges have been knocked about a bit. After descending and re-ascending the steps to South Stack I then followed the coast path in nice sunshine further south around Abraham's Bosom. I continued a few miles more along and then I cut back across towards Holyhead, stopping off to have a look at the interesting standing stones at Penrhosfeilw along the way. I just missed seeing Prince William on my bus ride back home as people were lining the streets of Treaddur Bay waiting for his public appearance at the lifeboat station.
