Second visit, from Halton Gill via Foxup and Cosh Farm to Cosh Outside TP, then E over Eller Carr Moss to this TP. Weather, and conditions underfoot as perfect today as they had been wretched four months earlier! ~~ 18/02/23 A 2 car point to point walk taking in 3 Trig Points, this was the first. Left my van at Kettlewell and then we drove to Halton Gill in Ceri’s 4wd and set off from there, then followed the whole line of the ridge between Littondale and Wharfedale back to Kettlewell via Firth Fell and Middlemoor Pasture. Not the best weather, views very limited. Very boggy underfoot in places. Nonetheless an excellent days walking. With Lucy Frost and Ceri Evans.

It was a nice afternoon so we nipped out for a short walk nearby. Parked up at Raisgill Farm on an expanse of grass by the cattle grid and simply followed the Pennine Journey path up by Hagg Beck where, after a bit of a climb, the pillar came invitingly into view just before the wall. Went through the gate and followed the path over to the TP. Fantastic views all around, the Yorkshire Three Peaks are plain to see, as are a good number of the other Dales Marilyns. It was a clear day so the Lakeland Fells were also in view, possibly Scafell, foolishly I hadn't bothered to pack my binoculars. Simply retraced our route back to the car and enjoyed the descent into Langstrothdale. This is must surely be one of the most rewarding short walks in The Dales. Decided to reward ourselves with a beer at The George in Hubberholme, but before that, went mouse hunting in the church.

The pillar is in need of a good coat of paint. Our first experience of continual rain prompted us to sack off further trigs and we chose to return via Beckermonds and the Dales Way. This turned out to be an unexpected surprise full of interesting limestone features which has enhanced my mark for interest. Green Field Beck was very low due to the unprecedented dry weather conditions we have experienced exposing long stretches of dry river beds. Yockenthwaite Cave and a nearby circular set of stones, located as a star on the ordnance survey map, added even further interest. A thoroughly smashing walk.

Out on a walk from Litton to enable a friend to visit the top of Birks Fell - her last English Nuttall. Continued along the wall side to enable me to bag this pillar and the one at Cosh Outside and also to enable me to visit some of the caches along the way. The pillar is highly visible being white and standing proud. Unfortunately, for us, it is on the west side of the wall and we were on the east side. A quick climb over soon had us to it. In very good condition. The views on a near perfect day were better than wonderful.

Second visit in marginally better weather, at least I could see it from over 100 yards away this time! Wet & windy. This log mainly for info - I came across from Cosh Outside along the ridge top (feint path exists) - easy to traverse as a lot of the walls are in disrepair (you do have to jump from one side to the other at times) - took just over an hour. When you get to Eller Car Moss and meet the ROW keep on the north side of the wall as the walls ahead have stiles/gates - not so on the southern side. Steep drop into Foxup. Circular from Horton.

Dark & brooding!

Starting from my campsite at Buckden I followed the Dales Way path until I reached the stonebridge at Yockenthwaite and then leaving the Dales Way I started the ascent to Horses Head. From this point onward to the summit and back down again, other than the sheep I did not see another living soul not even the Sykes Family. This seems a lonely place even the path way is covered in lush grass up to about halfway - not that well trodden at all. Maybe it was the excertions of yesterdays Buckden Pike walk but this hill felt unrelenting in its ascent , however on reaching the summit the views were excellent , particularly looking west towards Penyghent and Whernside. The top of the Trig has some slight damage , the O/S website lists it as slightly below 2000 feet with a computing year of 1951 and the height a/s/l at 605.332 metres (1986 feet).

All credit where it's due - it's a bit of slog up from Yockenthwaite, well done Charlie (and Gary). I came up from Buckden, following the river. At Yockenthwaite I headed up the bridleway that, today, was effectively a stream. The cloud was so low that I was walking in dense mist/rain and a howling face on wind all the way to the summit. The wall's good as it guides you to the trig, without it I wouldn't have bothered. 'Charlie spotted it from 400 yards', I spotted from about 40 feet!! What was supposed to be 'dry' weather (Met Office) turned up just as I got on the bus to come back to Leeds (3 hours too late - the weather that is). Ignore the score as the big 'G' showed me who's really in charge today! No cars, on foot. (Bus to Buckden).
