First of three visited on cycle ride from boat tied up in Whittlesey via various minor roads and droves and one stretch of main road. No one about at toll bar cottage so went through key pad gate and knocked on main house door. Willingly given permission to cross paddock and visit pillar. Good views from this minor eminence. Toll Bar cottage folk had returned when I went back down drive but were quick to point out that ‘it belongs to them’!

(2989) Parked up just inside the entranceway on Toll Road, and walked down to the main house. Kind lady there readily gave permission to visit the pillar. She said they get quite a few calls from both triggers and civil war enthusiasts alike. Pillar easily reachable, though the ground is quite waterlogged in places. In overall good condition and still sporting its original metalwork. Pillar history: Built on the 5th of March 1952, at a cost of £20 8s 0d. Last maintained by the OS in May of 1984.

Had to ask permission from the owner who was lovely. She was very helpful and informed me of the best way to go around her land and ponies would be. I initially went to the wrong bungalow, however, they were very chatty and kind and showed me where to go!

Diverted from a journey from Northumberland to Suffolk to visit the area I briefly lived in, age 7 until I was 10. I remember me and my mates cycling along dusty lanes between beet fields, the towering chimneys of the brick works, miles of conveyor belts trundling the dug clay across the landscape...most of those fields we roamed 50 years ago are now housing estates, or Amazon depots, or dual carriageway road systems with roundabouts every half a kilometre...pity poor Peterborough...I think either this or Farcet Manor Farm is the closest TP to where I grew up in the (then) hamlet of Orton Waterville. Given how awful the development (‘progress’) has been the idea of going back to see the old house was abandoned I just visited the 3 TPs closest by. That said this is a very interesting TP. Access asked for and happily granted by the house owner. The ponies are very friendly and were curious about the dog. Many thanks to Fenland Coddiwompler for the historical info below! Final observation: the whole of the hill fort is being undermined by rabbits! There is so much tunnelling underneath the base of the TP I would not be surprised to see future photos of the TP tilted at a jaunty angle, or even toppled!

View North Storm's TP # 98 "Horsey" Hill Fort indeed!

Horsey Hill Fort built in 1643 by Parliamentary troops during the Civil War. There is an historical reference to this site. 'In October 1644, shortly after Crowland and Peterborough fell, the Eastern Association sent 300 men from Cambridge to hold `Horsey Bridge Pass’.

Could see this pillar from what seemed like miles away across the fen. Knocked on the door of the big house (up the drive next to the cottage) and the lady of the house was happy for me to visit the pillar - even advised the safest route to avoid the mud & water. Great views in almost all directions.Sadly the sprawl of Peterborough is getting closer! Pillar in good condition with just a small chip missing from the top.

Part of Horsey Grange, a private house. There don't seem to be any plans to open up the Civil War fort( a Scheduled Ancient Monument)to the public at the moment. Horsey Hill fort (between Whittlesey and Stanground) had been built as part of a chain of defences along the border. The fort was a sophisticated gun emplacement and is among the best surviving in the country [ ref:www.peterboroughheritage.org.uk/civilwar.html]

This pillar is clearly visible from the A605 and B1095 roads, sitting on the site of the old civil war fort at Horsey Hill. I approached from the B1095 across a field, but the pillar is in a garden over two wire fences. I did not fancy climbing them when the pillar was so conspicuous from the house, so I decided to log it as unreachable as visible. I did not get a very clear view of it, but it seemed intact (see photo for details).
