The drive here was hampered by the sun being in my eyes. Parked in lay-by at side of road by FP. There was a van parked there and some people were camping. Not sure what they made of me with my gloves, secateurs and phone. I climbed over the gate and walked up the hedgerow on the opposite side to FP. Getting access to FB was easier then previous trig. But did need to do a bit of crawling as it is on opposite side to hole in hedge. Lovely moon-rise and sunset.

Access is easier from the east side, but the flush bracket faces into the hedge, so can only be viewed from the west side, something that will be very difficult in the growing season. Pillar has a failry large chunk of concrete missing from one of the top corners - probably due to hedge cutting. Both sight holes clear. Plug missing.

Pruning took 10 minutes or so before I could actually get close to the pillar to view its condition. Pillar in reasonable condition with some chunks out of the top corners; plug/cap missing; FB faces W into thick hawthorn - photographing it was difficult and necessitated scrambling over fencepost from W into hedge! W, N and E sightholes open; S sighthole not observed. Dull grey day, no stunning views apparent. Position logged from GPS device accurate to 5m.

The pillar was easy to find now that the hedge has shed its leaves; it is sited wholly within a hedge between a ploughed field and a grass field and was reached by a pleasant stroll up the scarp slope from Horton Court. It lacks a plug or cap and has FB S2534, facing west; the top of the pillar is chipped with the southeast corner missing. The site looks over the Cotswold plateau to the south and east; the view over the Vale of Berkeley to the north is masked by the trees that line the field; nearby to the west are the ramparts of the Iron Age Horton Camp. The earthworks of the fort give a good view over the Vale of Berkeley to the Forest of Dean and the Welsh Hills.
