The trig point is a bit of the path so Rach call and requested permission. Easy walk on the path from the Holmes Chapel road. Walk was a bit boggy due to all the rain.

On the gas plant land, now increasingly overgrown. Approached from lane to west, hopping a field gate and walking straight to it. You can also use PFP from lane to south, then left on the Gas Plant access 'road'. Various 'burping' gas valves about! Logged by Keith Stevens for HC U3A

Parked on Birches Lane opposite a gate. Climbed over the gate and crossed the field to the other side where you find an entrance to the next field with a cattle grid and a track ahead of it. Walked over the cattle grid into the next field and the pillar is on the left hand side behind an overgrown prickly bush. Still in very good condition

Fascinating spot, from the attractive linear village, newly planted trees and past hedgerows and little wild edges, pipes and meters ticking, some beautiful boundary oaks and a mysterious dark little pond. A much awaited return visit to Arley Gardens before.

1/7 On way back to Sheffield bagging trigs after dropping Aussie bound son at Manchester airport. Parked near FP by farm and sludged my way to the trig. Views...flat wet fields.

Parked at start of footpath near Hulse Farm. followed path south across two very boggy field to track which leads to the trig point. Very dull day no views.

Access from Hulse Farm headed South down the PRoW - close to dark and I doubt the place was made any better for it. What a dreary location and goodness knows what lies beneath now ? after years of Salt extraction. eventually found the pillar which seemed to be in remarkable condition and still stood vertical given its surroundings and activity below GL. Plug/Cap removed and filled. No reference to views due to time of day... Return by same route

HISTORY: Pillar completed 22nd February 1940 costing £4.1s.8d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SK08/T12 within the Macclesfield secondary block during 1948. Levelled to Class 1 precision as a secondary bench mark in 1949. Later levelled to tertiary standards during 1960 and last verified as such in 1964. Last maintained by the OS in November 1978. SITE VISIT: Parked in Lach Dennis, layby on south side of B5082 at SJ707720, just east of mapped RoW. Overall approach from SSE via mapped RoW to nearest track which leads to trig. Pillar lies north of track on grazing land. Column in good condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces WSW, compass measurement 252°. All sight holes open, innards filled with debris. Open skyline in all directions with breaks where there are trees.

Initially we parked within 200 yards of the pillar but didn't like walking across a field without permission. So, we relocated to a small lay-by next to a post box in Lach Dennis village, then took a PF from there. We still ended up walking down a track that was not shown as public access on our OS map. easy going though.

Just been to Northwich Victoria to see Lincoln get to the third round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1998! Couldn't resist a pillar to celebrate the success and the fact that we'd won meant that the huge quatities of mud here didn't bother me too much! This is flat open ground and the pillar is easy to spot. Approached from the N along the path then W along the access road. The pillar has a plastic plug replacement. The concrete base is exposed about 9" all round although covered with vegetation. S sighthole open. Moderate agricultural views. My first new log for almost 2 months!

Had tried this in the past but had to turn back because of work in the area.Finally able to get to it although it is a muddy walk. Follow the path from Lach Dennis to the south and then turn up an access road.

Plug replaced, all sighting holes open. Adjacent to a new wooden fence. Muddy approach from S via well-signed footpath, exit W across field to road somewhat easier. Ground still very wet.

Update: Revisited this one - alright - 3 months later, but the good news is its still here. The pipe laying work is still ongoing and access is a mare, although the footpath is now open again, the mud is horrendous!! No views to speak of and awful access, hence low score. ---Old log--->> Had no GPS with me just a map for this one and may have been looking in the wrong place. The RoW running to the east of the pillar is now closed, until about Christmas due to the pipeline work according to the sign on the stile. So tried to access from gate in hedge almost due west of pillar and couldn't see it. Will return with GPS later in the week to check more thoroughly.

Went back to check if it's still safe. Just about, but only a few feet from the new gas pipelines. It may well perish. Anyway, the pipes are for a new underground (salt caverns) gas storage facility, and if that goes up, half of Cheshire will perish!

Approached via footpath from Lach Dennis. Access fairly easy across fields on this path. A lot of excavation work is taking place around this trig at present so I hope it doesn't become a casualty.
