Parked in Archiestown and waked up the forest trail. Absolutely beautiful day with a lightly chilling wind from the East. Once out of the forestry block it took a little ferreting around to spot the pillar, maybe 30 metres back into the plantation. Plug removed and filled other wise all metal work intact. Excellent views but constrained by some of the forestry block. On return walked out to the small summit of Cain Cattoch.

Parked in the square at Archiestown and followed the forest tracks to the small dip between Hunt Hill and Cairn Cattoch. Short boggy walk up Hunt Hill and the trig sits just beyond the summit. Extensive views cut short by a squall coming in.

Revisit for photographs and GPS reading. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces southwest, ~206. Vented through NW sight hole. Broken views through trees include Ben Aigan and Ben Rinnes.

Log #169. Dropped the car off at Archiestown Hotel, and walked up the forestry tracks, skirting around the quarry on the way. The track up to the March Stone is clearly marked and signposted, and the stone itself is slap bang at the end of the track as it splits. I chose the left-hand path first, taking in the summit of Cairn Cattoch. On returning, I realised that the track in the direction of the pillar (double-dashed on the map), has been completely overgrown with new pine. Easiest thing to do is hop the fence and follow it on that side. Don't be tempted to cut back across too early, there is a clearing in the trees, and the pillar is visible from there. I also found another March Stone on the way to the pillar -- the lettering is not as well defined, but its otherwise a perfect copy of the more well-known one. The pillar's cap is missing and has been plugged. The WNW sight-hole is only one open. The view west is blocked by pine growth, but there are otherwise good views south along the valley to the Cairngorms. And obviously, Ben Rinnes is omnipresent, as it is from virtually every hill I've done in Moray. [ExP-141/MiP-3/Rev-2/BM-11/IS-10/Other-2]

Plugged cap. Also Ben Rinnes and the Convals.
March Stone #1 The one at the head of the track.
March Stone #2 Approx. halfway between previous one and the trig pillar.

Biked over from tirg at Carn na Cailliche, again the views not all that good dew to the newly planted trees. Was intrigued with the March Stone on the way up.

Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed 3rd November 1953 costing 23.4s.6d. Later in 1953 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NJ45/T5 in the Elgin secondary block. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1953 too. This marker was last maintained by the OS in May 1981. A long haul up through deep heather. Some previous OS lists show this FB as S7251. I can confirm that it is definitely S7215, GRP.
