(2816) The pillar is easily seen from the roadside, it sits about 100m into the field, but a fledgling crop stood in the way today. I could see activity at the nearby farm, so stopped by to ask if a closer visit was possible. Nice friendly chap readily gave permission. His favourite field to work in because of the views. He also mentioned the pillar at Cold Harbour Farm which happened to be next on my list. As for this pillar, all is good in terms of condition - original centre cap retained. And yes, some good views on offer. A nice one to bag, especially as I'd initially thought I was going to come away empty handed. Pillar history: Built on the 18th of May 1951, at a cost of £8 17s 3d. Last maintained by the OS in May of 1975.

Parked on the grass verge by the lane and hopped up the short bank into the field. Quite muddy after the recent rains so feet soon became quite heavy. Pillar has nice views all around but unfortunately the White Horse is "Snookered" by one of the trees. Took muddy boots off and went for a beer at The Mowbray Arms in Thirsk.

Another pillar benefiting from timing - I tried for this one earlier in the week, and it was still in the process of being harvested of thigh-high wheat. I chose not to disturb the crop, and instead tried my luck a few days later - and bingo, the field was cleared. We parked in the lane, and I nipped up the low bank and across the field. The pillar sits just off the highest ground, on a slight raised mound, with great clear views all round. You are visible from the nearby farm whilst at the pillar, but it isn't that close - and the lack of crop meant access was unhindered and very straightforward. Pillar in fine condition, albeit clearly used as a perch for birds. There was a piece of ironwork on top, I left it in place, and returned the same way.

Delighted - the crop has gone
