Nice to see all the ponies all over the place. Even the occasional cow. Trig has been adopted by The Ringwood and Fordingbridge Footpath Soc, who have painted it white. They even painted the FB so it was hard to locate, and for one moment I thought it didnt have one. Nice views all around.

Day trip to the New Forest for some leaf peeping and trig collecting - very misty, but good breezy walking weather. From Linwood, via Appleslade Inclosure, and Rockford and Ibsley Commons. Very boggy in places, and significant path on ground / map mismatch, but made it round OK. Trig has flattish New Forest views, but is in vgc - asphalt cap, all s/holes open, but very bright white still!

A year less one day since the last recorded visit, now that's a surprise. My wife and I walked up from Linwood attempting to follow the footpaths shown on the OS maps but out on the heath animals seem to have created their own versions that led us through some very boggy ground. The pillar is still resplendent in white paint but the paint makes the FB digits a bit less clear but still S6438, not S6428.

Unsure how Griggsy made out the FB number as 6428 in Apr last year, but yesterday it was quite clearly 6438! FB6428 is tucked away just across the border in Wales and does not have a white coat, so photos not been mixed up - methinks some spoofing (by way of photoshop?) has been going on here (an April Fools joke?). Parked on the lovely sounding Mockbeggar Lane and walked the 1km to the trig over New Forest heathland. The pillar has a coat of brilliant white paint, probably courtesy of their adpoted parents, the Ringwood and Fordingbridge Footpath Society (The RFFS say "The adoption was done through OS. At the time they were asking for groups or people to adopt and regularly inspect trig pillars. RFFS offered to adopt another but this was not accepted"). The pillar does look stunning bathed in sunlight, as it was yesterday, and is in good condition; all sight holes open; cap missing, replacement asphalt plug - plug and FB all painted white! 360deg views, but not spectacular. Just 1 NF pony spotted, but lots of highland-looking cows and calves.

The pillar, including its asphalt plug and FB S6438, is painted white and stands in a small grassy patch in an area of heathery heathland. Heath lies to the south and distant hill tops of Cranborne Chase can be seen to the west but nearby trees prevent a view in other directions. The site was reached by a pleasant short walk from Mockbeggar. A stroll around Ibsley Common and Chibden Bottom revealed several tumuli and the remnants of some war time buildings; several ponies were grazing and there are some fine view across the New Forest and over to the distant downs of Cranborne Chase.
