Parked in village of Aughton on east side of road opposite start of footpath going west. After passing houses through gate and gradual uphill climb, first part was quite overgrown with vegetation looks like not used very often. Then an electric fence across the path and no indication of footpath sign. Continued uphill and west. On far side of hill another electric fence but at least a footpath sign as well which was reassuring. Ground levelled out. Along farm track. No sign of pillar, few more electric fences to negotiate. Seemed to lose a little height so starting to wonder. Then spotted pillar on line of fence in the distance. About a twenty minute walk from the road. Good views across fields. Bit misty at the time. Cap missing. Residue of red/ brown paint.

Endured a spot of weather at this pillar. Fortunately, it dried up by the time I was halfway back. Route to trig wasn't quite as straightforward as I'd expected, with some overgrown vegetation behind the gate near the start of the byway, and a number of electric fences to be unclipped. However, the public right of way leads straight to the pillar, so it was easily found. Lots of gunshots echoed around whilst I was at the pillar, which was a little disconcerting. And there's a lot of hares running across the fields at this time of year.

Ignored the sign saying "no, motors, bikes, horses". And cycled down byway. Met 3 tractors and a car. No one said anything. Only waved thanks for me getting off track to let them pass. Trig has reddish hew. Not bad views. There is a patch of mowed grass, like a lawn, with signs saying "keep off the grass", next to trig. Used as a model airplane runway.

Strolled up from Aughton; pillar has open cap & all four sight-holes open. Just earlier I had been trying to locate the site of Collingbourne Ducis' long gone railway station. The old trackbed is there, the remains of two bridges and plenty of concrete posting & fencing, a Station House & what was the railway yard, but nothing of the actual station which closed in 1961.
