This was my James Brindley homage walk. The great canal engineer caught a chill hereabouts after getting soaked while surveying the Caldon Canal. At the inn in Ipstones he was put in a damp bed, his health deteriorated and he was taken home to Turnhurst where he died on27 September 1772. My walk took me from the boat tied up at Froghall to Cherryeye Bridge then fields and tracks to the trig. Back via the village, passing the Old Red Lion where Brindley lay, then more field paths and a steep descent back to the canal.

Couldn't find anyone to get permission so approached it from the S side to be rewarded by great views. The church was a surprise: refreshingly cool inside, tea and coffee available for visitors (self-service, had a tea), secondhand books for sale (bought a Roald Dahl), bought a jar of jam (for Head Office) and admired the fine interior woodwork. I appreciate these buildings, despite being a devout atheist. A welcome rest. Back to Leek via old Cheddleton then home. A great day.

On up the Devils Staircase – a disappointment – just a flight of concrete steps. The Ipstones trigpoint stands on a mound that could be a tumulus – certainly looked man made – great views all round. Passed the nuclear bunker below the trigpoint as mentioned by mickandshane. Continued onto Frogall Warf via Foxt – then along the canal and back through Consall Wood. The Churnet Valley Railway runs along the valley – I heard the whistle several times but didn’t catch sight of the steam train till I finally crossed the line and climbed out of the valley. A great area for walking with lots woodland and industrial history. Off to bag some nearby roadside trigpoints.
