Boggy, wet track from three bridges on A846. Did Beinn Shiantaidh first then Beinn an Oir (2 Paps are enough for anyone). First hill was a fine scramble, this one a straight forward trudge up a well made path, but there was a trig at the top! Pillar sited in large shelter cairn, good condition if a little roughly cast; cap missing, asphalt plug, 1 sight hole open. Cloud skimming top of the hill so no views from summit. An extra point for being highest point on Jura.

At first light I bounded off along the track past Inver Cottage having started from the relative comfort of Feolin Ferry. My progress up to the Sloc Brodach hillside was quicker than I had expected and it was from there that I slip-slided my way across the moor to attain the northwest slope of the mountain. A few hundred metres south of Loch an Oir I spied out a good line of grass between scree runs, and it was up here that I started my climb. It had rained almost daily for the week Id spent over here and today it was really like struggling up a big jelly shaped sponge. Once at the summit I found the trig pillar tucked away in a stone shelter and I joined it for a very intimate ten minutes, scoffing away chocolate sweets. All too soon it was time to move on once more and I started down via the same route once again. To reduce the gradient a bit I descended more gradually across the rocks to Na Garbh Lochanan. With the sun shining brightly in my face I retraced my steps along the track to the ferry and began the long 32 hour journey back home to Wales.

Trig in relatively good condition for such an exposed situation due possibly to the substantial shelter-cairn. Asphalt plug in spider centre. B S M type FB. Previously visited this iconic Corbett 06/10/99 no trig details noted.

Included the 3 paps whilst on a cycle trip across Scotland (from Aberdeenshire) to swim the Corryvreckan. I climbed the first Pap (Beinn a Chaolois) the day before and camped at the fishing hut at Loch an t-Siob before climbing Beinn an Oir and Beinn Shiantaidh then cycling on to the top of Jura before my swim on 23/08/2011. The whole trip was very memorable.

Sadly, my worst day ever on Scottish hills. Persevered to top in driving rain, wind and fog.On my own i would have given up, but had persuaded ex fell runner to show us the way up. Absolutely horrendous experience, but as I can see the Paps whenever I step out my kitchen door, I know this is not always the case so must return for a more pleasant experience to up the rating!

Superb summit, quartzite, great view, perfect weather. vgc, asphalt plug, BSM style FB, oddly contrasting with its sister Primary Beinn Tart a' Mhill which is OSBM S3679. Approached from Craghouse via Brat Bheinn & Dubh Bheinn, having failed to find a boat to S8983 (finally got it the next day...) Then descended via excellent path to catch 1840 ferry back to Islay - walking right past the Rubha Barr bolt which I didn't know about :-(
