The most south-easterly pillar in Sussex. Luckily there is a lay-by right next to the pillar. Probably very busy in summer. Very disappointed to discover the flush plate is half buried in concrete hiding the FB number. Most inconsiderate. Marked down for that reason. Wanted to be more generous as it’s at an extremity of the county and completes the set for Sussex. Revisit 12 February 2024, cycled from Rye, equipped with tool to excavate FB but really only needed a trowel as it was hidden by build up of sand which was easier to remove than expected. A nearby piece of discarded wood was used as a shovel to remove loose sand after digging into it with a screwdriver. Washed off remaining sand with water from my drink bottle. The FB number has been added to my log and score increased from 4 to 6. On the sea wall nearby is a notice with information about the work being done on the sea defences- Omission added. Bit confused by reading logs before and since my last visit in November 2021. Seems there was a layer of cement half burying the FB, but no other logs mentioned having removed it. Maybe someone dug it out in the meantime, not logged, and hole subsequently filled with blown sand.

Pillar is easily found part buried in the sea wall just where the Lydd Rd turns inland opposite some bungalows. There is a small layby immediately below the pillar. Original plug has been replaced with tarmac but I suppose we should be thankful that the FB faces N and is therefore still accessible. Best views are across Rye Bay to the SW. Views inland across the rather flat Romney Marsh are unremarkable. Highly unusual to be so close to the sea whilst having a trig pillar for company - I'm more used to being on a hill top or in the middle of a desolate moor !!
