Concocted a cracking route to take in Keirwoodhead trig, Westmuir Trig and Hill of Midgate. Single car parking at 034190 on B934. Core path non existent so crossed A9 to old A9. W past Cairnie Cott and cut across fields to trig, no fences. Out N to Charlesfield. 1 barbed wire & 2 Deer with vertical ladder fences. N then E on road and through wood to Westmuir track. Easy walk in to Hill and short, amazingly dry heather to trig. Back to Blairbell and past beautiful Pitcairnie Loch, over A9 to almost Dupplin Castle. Out via Beech Rounall and Bankhead. 18.5km, 235m ascent. Beautiful views and loads of ticks in places.

3rd pillar of the day travelling home from Glasgow having had 2 enjoyable walks that took me to the final 2 pillars I hadn't visited in Clacks. For this one I decided to walk in from the road to the north. Big mistake. Parked at NO013200. Marked track and path overgrown with bracken and gorse in many places. Had to climb ladder fences at each locked gate at 3 deer fence crossings. I have a painful hip and this wasn't great! Eventually reached final one at NO013187. Followed track to ruins of Keirwoodhead and then made mistake of going south round the ruins and met an electric fence (easy to get under), broken down stone wall then a gap filled with nettles before barbed wire fence. Had to walk up this (through waist high nettles for a couple of metres before scrambing out around the end of the fence a short distance from the pillar (phew!). I had taken the best part of an hour reach the pillar,1.5 miles from my van. Through the trees to the west I could see what must have been Ben Vorlich and Stuc a Chroin. I returned the easier way above the ruins and when I reached the cross roads of tracks beyond the deer fence , I headed straight ahead to the road near Charlesfield and returned to my van by the road much easier than outward journey and no nettles, gorse or bracken.

Through a tied gate then parked at end close to the mound that now blocks the road. Walk over this and over old gate and then easy access into field and up to trig, crossing a couple of fences. Only 250m from road. Took a while watching an osprey. Then I clocked a Land Rover at my car. Must have been the woman from the house I passed. They did a u turn and left. Cracking sunny day.

Log #101. There is space for a small car at 005181, just by the gate. From there it's an interesting walk along what must have been a manically busy road at one point (cat's eyes and white paint still there in places). More or less directly south of the pillar, I beelined up the hill by following the line of the fence to the pillar. Very hazy today unfortunately, so not too much of a view. Indented cap is present and the pillar is in good nick. Took a 'shortcut' back by heading west from the pillar, but wasted a lot of time skirting around field boundaries. Knocked a half-mark off for the haze, and another half-mark off for the traffic noise. [ExP-93/MiP-1/BM-7]

Come in from east as far as a gate across the road and its clear from mud n stuff on road beyond its unused. easy to hoof it up through the field on a path diagonally upwards and pillar is on elevated section on southern edge of the trees. Very pretty location and views. road through west after another gate is actually blocked with a bloody great grassy mound of earth. Re trace steps.

Walked along the old road from Dalreoch Bridge; a most unusual experience this, for I've walked plenty of old railway lines, but I think that this is a first in disused major roads. Much of this redundant road has been reclaimed by nature, but every now and then I'd notice a faint white line which once marked the middle of the road, plus old cats-eyes: it brought on a surprising nostalgia for this dead road and what it once was! Over a few fences and up to the pillar which is now deep within foot-high grasses. A lovely array of speedwell was bunched against the flush bracket making this trig particularly attractive in its green setting.
