First round pillar i have found. Been around Kettla Ness a few times on the mountain bike but decided to walk this time. Nice scenery on the West coast. Good clear day, could see Foula and Fair Isle.

I parked at the road end at Duncansclett from where it is a deceptively long walk first along a beautiful ayre round Banna Minn, over farmland and then slightly soggy moorland. A beautifully wild place and the wind was easily gale force when I reached the pillar, the low stone wall surrounding the pillar on three sides providing only minimal shelter! Cylindrical pillar; FB faces ENE; all sightholes below ground level; original top with raised letters. Rabbits have made their home under the ground just by the pillar - I hope they're not nibbling the OS concrete from below! Clearly visible from here is South Havra Windmill (TP10401).

I began this walk on the opposite side of Shetland Mainland at Easter Quarff. After an awesome cross country hike from Wester Quarff I then made my way onto West Burra, following the road across the island Trondra first. By the time I reached Kettla Ness to the south it was early evening. Once I had visited the superb cylindrical trig I then sat on the cliff tops a while watching fishermen checking their creels below. Id already pitched my tent back at Banna Minn and that night I enjoyed a truly beautiful red sunset over the mouth of the bay.

Not a day to hang around with a strong WNW wind, possibly gusting gale force. Snow covered Foula just visible at times to the west and other views to the east and NW also with snow on the hills. Temperature 3C but felt colder due to wind chill.
