The BW I followed to get to this Trig were very sandy. It might be good for horses but it is v difficult to cycle on. In some places you could see that extra sand had been added (it was a different colour). Past a Gas Pipe Line sudo Trig on the way. Pictured. Trig is on raised concrete domed base and has rust coming out of it that has discoloured the FB.

A survey in 2014 found that Surrey has the highest concentration of trees in Britain; more than any other county, which was surprising to me. But spending most of the day wandering, walking, and driving around this part of Surrey, I can begin to believe it. Wonderful. To reach the pillar on Kettlebury Hill was a relatively simple task with an ascent through heather, gorse, and sandy soil. Pillar fine with open cap and one s/h open positioned on a rather ugly mass of concrete.

Followed bridle path off road up to wider path and then up to the Pillar. The car park has a 4.3m height restriction frame to stop illegal parking from tall vehicles. Good views in most directions. Distant gunfire reminds you that this is a MoD training area with public access. Mind where you wander and resist picking up pyrotechnic debris and empty ammunition cases - not all of them are empty to the untrained eye.

I parked in the forest car park (entrance at SU 88288 39215) and followed the well marked trail up to the pillar, set on it’s large concrete plinth… an easy uphill but not steep walk. The pillar is in generally good condition but the centre plug has been removed. The views to the east and south are best as the other directions are obscured by trees.

Saw no-one else during my visit. The pillar is in good condition but the underneath of the concrete base is serverly erroded giving it a strange appearence. It looks from some angles that the pillar is sitting on top of a giant toadstall!
