Limited parking to W at NJ 8519 0561, seems locals don't want cars here but there is a little space. Pillar sits on N side of forest track; has a significant lean; centre tube uncapped and unplugged; RHS sight hole open. No views.

Parked down the lane to Craiglug, and followed the track which runs around the periphery of Kingshill. Up to the reservoir to find the pillar in the darkened woods. No cap; one s/h open. Took the direct footpath through the woods back to Craiglug.

Out geocaching with my daughter. Completely forgot there was a trig around here and was delighted when we saw it in the distance. GPSr reading from the trig was not that brilliant. Was not a surprise has not been getting a good signal at all today.

Log #530. From Gairnlea via network of woodland tracks. Enjoyable, but marks off for the gigantic gouges across track from felling works. Pillar has distinct lean, but aside from that is generally in OK condition. [ExP-363/MiP-38/Rev-6/BM-42/IS-53/Other-28]

Nice morning walk to this. The track I wanted to drive up seems to have disappeared due to road works, so drove up a good track to Craiglug which gave me a great view of the road works. Parked near a gate and followed track all the way to the water works and then a wee track up to the trig point. Good views down to the coast.

Managed to park in the remnants of the forestry car park at Gairnlea (removed by the next-door by-pass works) and followed the track north then branched east to the pillar. Condition as previously reported. For those in a hurry a quicker route would be from the Fifeshill farm track to the south. Nice walk through the wood which I guess will be different once the noise of the by-pass traffic starts. Progress on the roadworks must be slow as they were still working flat-out on a Saturday when I left at the back of 5:00.

Pillar completed 1st July 1949. Tertiary station in Block NO89, Aberdeen. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces east. The last picture probably understates the eastward tilt. Yes this pillar really does lean like this, there is no photo trickery here. I believe the official OS term is 'off plumb'. The ground here is very damp even during dry spells and a stream passes next to the trig. The foundations have probably subsided. Problem is, if the pillar does topple, the FB will be face down. Within walking distance of Aberdeen. Photographed from NW, Sth and E(FB). Photographed 7/05/2002, GRP.

Pillar completed 1st July 1949. Tertiary station in Block NO89, Aberdeen. The leaning pillar of Kingshill. This pillar is leaning forwards (eastwards) towards the camera. It does not stand near a summit, it is in a small valley beside a running stream. Judging by the age of the trees, it is hard to believe that this trig was ever intervisible with any others. See next picture for more leaning aspects. Photographed 30/08/2000, GRP.
