Parked in the cemetery car park then a slightly circuitous route up to the trig to keep out of sight of the cattle. Good view.

Parked at Ettleton cemetery and walked up the hillside through a network of earth banks, presumably the remains of a medieval (and probably partly earlier) field system. The trig gets extra marks for being sited on the bank of the large Iron Age hillfort which surrounds the top of the hill. Good views across the empty hillscape to the west. Skylarks in full song.

Parked at the old quarry at Bedda Hill followed by a wet trudge across tussocky grass and bog rather like the visits to the pillars immediately east and west. The pillar seems to have deteriorated since the last photos were taken. Fine views including the peaks of the Lake District and north Pennines. Found the Newcastleton fundamental bench mark near the top of the quarry which was a bonus as I didn't know it was there.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 6th November 1957 costing 44.3s.5d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NY29/T19 within the Lockerbie secondary block during 1959. Levelled for height to Class 2 precision also in 1959. Last maintained by the OS in May 1977. SITE VISIT: Approached from east. Parked by cemetery gates (NY471862) and walked straight line across grazing moor to summit. Grazing top split by dry stane dyke with electric fence on both sides. Pillar on NW side of wall. Column edges weathered away, damage probably assisted by cattle. Spider retains OS cap with raised large narrow lettering. Flush bracket faces NW, compass measurement 313. RHS (SW) sight hole open, others plugged. Panoramic views from top.
