Once again on the way to the County Ground, and realizing that there were no red flags flying today, ventured along the by-way to find this pillar with open cap, and two & a half sight-holes open.

Took advantage of the Christmas stand down to log all the range trigs on Salisbury Plain. This the first on a beautiful sunny morning - sited on top of a barrow and has good views N and W. Centre, and all s/holes except E open, otherwise vgc.

Located on the edge of Larkhill Barracks, access can be gained, when the flags are not flying, via a byway to the west of the barracks from the minor road running to the south. The pillar is sited on top of a barrow with good views to the west. 2 sight holes are open, the other 2 sealed. Centre cap is missing with the hole open. Pillar has some slight chiping off one top corner, but otherwise is in good condition.

Easy to locate and access. On edge of Army ranges, but not far from nearest footpath. Visited on the same day as the Queen visited the Army at Larkhill; don't think she visited the trip point.

The pillar is painted white and is perched on top of a long barrow within the Salisbury Plain SSSI; it lacks a cap or plug and has FB S2172. The barrow is next to a byway that is open when the adjacent firing range is not in use; a flight of swallows were flying around the top as I approached. Various fences, huts, towers, and the playing fields associated with the Larkhill Barracks are to the south and east. To the north and west stretches the undulating grassland of the interior of the firing range; Bustard to the west and Enford to the north. Nearby is the seating and a flag pole of an army demonstration area and to the north is the Point to Point course.
