No red flags today, so drove up byway from the south and pulled in within sight of the pillar, which sits proudly and unmissably atop an overgrown barrow. Pillar was guarded by a chap in a Safety And Training vehicle. Checked with him whether it would be okay to bag it. Was advised folk aren't permitted on top of the barrow, but he kindly gave me five minutes up there to take my selfies. Nice bloke, very chatty and very accommodating, and I am very grateful.

Antenna switched off for this. Maybe the heat! Approached by road from Durrington to east and turned right off and back on to the busy main road three times before getting onto to the white dusty gravelly byway heading north then east around the perimeter of Larkhill camp. Tried asking at one of the manned entrance gates to go through the camp but was directed around the outside. Couple of points along track where unsure which track to take. Went past the barrow, stopped, had a look around but not onto the top (don’t know why). Continued further round until track overlooked the race course. Stopped again and checked around. Back again to near the barrow. Even looked in a brick cupboard where there was an electric meter. Eventually after getting a bit of help on here headed back to the barrow to north of rear entrance to camp and walked up it, there’s the pillar. A bit hidden by vegetation but should have seen it had I looked towards it in the first place. Great views to the north.

Pillar in good condition with FB but no cap. It sits on top of an old longbarrow next to a military facility. I drove up the road almost to the trig itself - nobody showed any interest in what I was doing. No red flags but further down the road squaddies were doing their morning excercise. Views limited in one direction by the army camp.

Located on the edge of Larkhill Barracks, access can be gained, when the flags are not flying, via a byway to the west of the barracks from the minor road running to the south. The pillar is sited on top of a barrow with good views to the west. 2 sight holes are open, the other 2 sealed. Centre cap is missing with the hole open. Pillar has some slight chiping off one top corner, but otherwise is in good condition.

The pillar is painted white and is perched on top of a long barrow within the Salisbury Plain SSSI; it lacks a cap or plug and has FB S2172. The barrow is next to a byway that is open when the adjacent firing range is not in use; a flight of swallows were flying around the top as I approached. Various fences, huts, towers, and the playing fields associated with the Larkhill Barracks are to the south and east. To the north and west stretches the undulating grassland of the interior of the firing range; Bustard to the west and Enford to the north. Nearby is the seating and a flag pole of an army demonstration area and to the north is the Point to Point course.
