Fairly easy trig to access. We walked up the surfaced path from Balloch Castle, although nearer parking is at waterworks. Left the path on the edge of the tree line at 56.031454, -4.573596 where there is a faint path all the way to the trig and you can duck under the deer fence. Unusual trig which we enjoyed seeing. With Alma Aurea.

Parking at the waterworks. Did the hill first (175m spot height). Tricky navigation through the woods, lot of felled trees, also deer fence crossed and re-crossed, should have just stayed on NW side of it. An irregular stone-built pillar in woodland. Original top cap is retained, lightly indented lettering; rear sight hole open. No views.

Good condition, moss-covered stone-built pillar with cap with sunken lettering present. No sightholes, no idea what direction the FB was in due to a huge swarm of flies and the fact the pillar is completely enclosed by trees. There is a small fire-break showing a tiny slice of Loch Lomond, but that's your lot. Parked at Balloch Castle (GOML signs further up the road) and walked up. Headed up the forestry track starting at NS390847. This is fine up until you reach a phone mast at which point the track continues but is as SlainteJimmy describes. Fern clogged and muddy. Follow this until NS3938285072 where there's a clear line up the hill through the trees. Easy plod up this and once you clear the conifers, take a hard right for about 40m to the trig.

As intact as one of these stone-conglomorate pillars get with no obvious sightholes amidst the moss. The forestry track from Balloch Castle and indeed all the ground away from pasture is overgrown with 4-foot-fernage... second attempt from the western telecom mast saw me spend an hour crashing through thick under and overgrowth with a million flies for company. :-( Finally bagged after restarting from the top corner of the sheep n cow pasture and punching due North along the Deer fence. Sneaky little peek of the Loch to the NorthWest... Mount and mounting Misery indeed! Just the WRONG time of year to attempt this otherwise lovely, mossy lil feller! :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGI5QRnkroc

Easy enough to find, although I had rather a bash through brush to get there. Why is the hill subtitled Mount Misery anyway? It seems a new path runs over the actual summit, although not past the mossy trig. In winter at least there is a partial view of the lake and I managed to time it so that a rainbow was suggesting a pot of gold on Inchmurrin.

Visited to record FB number. HISTORY: Pillar completed 13th December 1948 costing £9.12s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS29/T63 in 1952. Levelled for height in 1969. Last maintained by the OS in June 1980. SITE VISIT: Most unusual moss covered stone built pillar, but was still in good condition by 1996. Spider retained original OS plug. The flush bracket once faced west across Loch Lomond. It still faces west but there is no longer a view to Loch Lomond as Knockour Hill summit is now wooded. I cannot remember my exact direction of approach, but I am sure it was from the SW. It looks fairly straight forward on the map. Located on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, just two miles north of Balloch.
