Easy access from the entrance to the gliding club to the north - the permissive path round behind the aerodrome building ensures no problems with glider activities and gives excellent views to the west. Watching the gliders being towed is fascinating too. Pillar in excellent condition, except someone has stuffed a plastic bottle down into the open hole. I tried to remove it but it'll need a knife or screwdriver type tool to get enough grip on it pull it out. We could just see Cadair Idris far far to the west

The pillar is sited on the heathery ridge of the Long Mynd to the southwest of Church Stretton. It has FB S5208 and lacks a plug or cap although the allen keys are still present. I parked in the small disused quarry next to the minor road to the east of Myndtown. I ascended the west face of the Mynd by means of the bridleway path to the north, affording spectacular views of the Welsh hills. My return journey south to Black Knoll was rewarded with a view of Clee Hill in the east and as far as the Malvern Hills and hills of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the south. As I started my descent towards the quarry I met a couple of exhausted cyclists pushing their bikes up the rough track. I had previously encountered them unloading their bikes back at the quarry. Visibility was exceptionally clear. From the trig the Camlad Valley, Corndon Hill and Stiperstones could be seen in the west; Plynlimon and some peaks of Snowdonia were visible in the distance. There is a bowl barrow close to the pillar and the area is within the Shropshire Hills AONB.
