Just reading the last bagger and his visit to the Knowe Fell. How 2 days can be so different! Think I picked the dirtiest day this summer to bag this one. From stepping out of the car to getting back it was heavy rain, low cloud and TBH, fairly miserable! Using GPS was a godsend, although it didn't divert me round the sucklers on the fell. Not sure who got the biggest shock - them or me! Successfully found the top but no views except a see of mist through the heavy rain. Decided to be sensible and take an easier circuitous route than I had initially planned.

I'd gone up the Pennine Way from the Halton Gill - Stainforth Road and bagged Cow Close Fell, and on returning to the twin cairns on the PW I decided on a whim to continue S to bag Knowe Fell. Tough section from the cairns past Fountains Fell Tarn, eventually a wall is reached and after that you follow walls and fences the rest of the way. Slightly different route on return, skirted the rough stuff around the tarn and instead found a decent path that lead directly to the cairn that marks the 668m 'Marilyn' top of Fountains Fell, before a precipitous descent back to the Pennine Way and the start point. Fantastic weather, bone dry going underfoot, terrific views - what’s not to like?

Malham Tarn appeared as we climbed west and uphill. Hot day has calmed the cattle. This pillar stands proud overseeing all of the 3 Peaks to the west. Spent time soaking in the views as well as the sunny rays. Spider core is missing. On to our 2nd trig north beyond Fountains Fell Tarn.

Walked up from the top of Henside Lane, initially on the bridleway, then following quad tracks alongside the wall heading north. Loved the views from the pillar especially across to Pen-y-Ghent but made the mistake of stopping too long on the top and didn't take enough care setting off back down in the gathering gloom. Jogged down the quad tracks, taking care to watch where I was putting my feet but not that I was following a different wall to the one I ascended by.. Realised my schoolboy error when I ran out of fell in the dark and a kilometre NW of where I should have been.

Last came to Fountains Fell in cold winter fog with a blizzard and knee deep snow troughs about 15 years ago. Strange it took so long to come back, last Marilyn of the area and fairly dry underfoot. A cold moody wind shattering the clouds to NW. Overstep the summit for a view of Littondale where I ended 2019's walks - saying this year would be the year I explored N Yks. So this is the return after the last walk I did pre-lockdown. All very poignant. A hard hill in some ways but also mesmerising, very westward views to start (hello Pendle, Weets, Pinhaw, Winter, Pen Y Ghent, Black Coombe) until a glorious submerge in the limestone country views half way up.

Day out with the Mayes, hiked up from Malham via the Cove, Gordale Scar and the Tarn. It was 50/50 whether we going to bother but decided to go for it, a fairly joyless cross-country slog up to the ridge, duck under the knackered old electric fence. Took in the views of the distant Three Peaks (Ingleborough obscured by cloud), an even more joyless cross-country slog downhill making a beeline for the Tarn to return to get back to Malham in the dark for tea at the Buck. Hard work as we're both a bit under the weather (coronavirus suspected), great walk round the Malham highlights but lots of effort for not that much reward as far as the trig went.

Walked up from Malham Tarn on a desperately awful day; wind, rain, fog... dreadful. I'm sure there are stunning views up here - I know there are on Fountain's Fell - but we saw nothing today but wet hill fog. The pillar is in fine condition, albeit with an open cap. The 'electric' fence is nothing of the sort now, it's just a knackered old wire fence. In several places the wind has actually blown the posts out of the ground, and in the dips in the landscape you can simply walk underneath it. We went up Fountain's Fell and returned via the Pennine Way.

From a distance I could see the broken wall but getting nearer the electric fence was visible. The fence near the trig runs alongside the old wall heading both west & north. Fortunately there was enough of the old wall at the field corner to provide a platform (for anybody reasonabley agile) to climb & jump the fence. As this is now on access land I would have thought this should be a prime site to have a stile. The fence has one sign at this point saying it's electric but the fence carries on for miles across Fountains Fell with no other signage - is it stll live? If it's live is it legal if it's on Access Land? If it is live don't do the reverse of this initial assent, the fence is too high to jump from ground level unless you're confident with your Fosbury Flop. No cars, on foot!

Found this one while doing the nearby geocache, came up the Pennine Way from Tennant Gill Farm and along the ridge top – a tip for future seekers is that you need to be on the western side of the electric fence! Plug is missing, but the view from up here (assuming the mist has cleared) must be fantastic!

Margaret, Charlie(9), Harvey(5) and I bagged this one on an 8 mile circular route up the Pennine Way to the summit then along the top (over the electric fence!) to the Trig and back down Knowe Fell to the car. Lovely, bright day with fantastic views of Pen-Y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Malham Tarn en-route.
