Lovely stroll from the Well of Lecht. Idyllic day. After the long dry spell conditions underfoot fine. Some damage to two of the top corners.

Easy to spot the trig from afar once up onto the ridge. Bit of a slog to get up onto the ridge and then the (thankfully mostly dry) peat hags were a bit tricky to negotiate. We found an easier route back down to the path on the way back but did involve clambering across the top of a steep gully!

From the Well of Lecht car park, via the College of Scalan to Chapeltown then across to Ladderfoot and up the Ladder Burn track to the ridge then along the ridge to Carn Liath and dropped down to the Lecht Mine and back to the car. Another great day!

HISTORY: Pillar completed 1st May 1956 costing 48.16s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NJ40/12 within the Ballater block during 1956. Levelled for height also in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in July 1978. SITE VISIT: Official car park at NJ234152. Followed mapped path to high point at NJ235168 and followed tops round to trig. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces 16 ENE. Vented through SW sight hole. Would have enjoyed a 360 panoramic view but the cloud came right down very quickly, and with no continuous paths it was necessary to naviagate most of the return journey using map compass and GPS in wind driven hail. Soaked!

It was a long slog through fairly deep snow from Duffdefiance. Clear blue skies made up for the effort needed to reach here. Someone had taken the easy way and arrived on a snow mobile.
