Emailed Brian and arranged to visit when he was home. The trig stands proud in his front garden and is easily seen from the road. He told us how it came to be there and we signed his visitors book which he keeps next to it. He welcomes visitors and is happy for people to go anytime whether he's home or not.

(1206) I was originally going to base my trigging day around Driffield, but upon seeing this one, I changed my plan to the Malton area. I'd emailed Brian beforehand, about visiting, and permission was freely given. Unfortunately, he wouldn't be around on the day, so I didn't get to hear first hand the how and why of this pillars survival and relocation. The logs on here certainly makes for interesting reading. Not much in the way of parking in the area, so the Sainsbury's car park off Spittal street came in very handy. The pillar is located at No46 Newbiggin, and is very visible from the pavement. Closer inspection reveals everything to be good, apart from a chipped section to the LHS of the FB. And looking resplendent with a gleaming white coat of paint. Visitors book duly signed, and many photos taken. Cheers, Brian! Also visited the pillars original location for the sake of completeness - that's located about 2 miles away near East Wold farm on Langton Road. Pillar history: Built on the 13th of April 1951, at a cost of £15 5s 0d. Last maintained by the OS in July of 1984. Marked as destroyed in February of 1994.

Excellent to finally get to visit this moved trig in Brian Dunning's front garden and have a brief coffee with him and sign his visitors book. He was telling me about its removal and how he organised it after he got a call from his boss saying the farmer wanted it removed. Apparently the OS set £250 as the price they were willing to pay a contractor to remove and dispose of a trig and so he bid 240 and actually got paid to organise it. He hired a JCB. It was all a bit of a struggle. I think they cut off some of the subterranean concrete. Very unique.

Brian explained that in the case of this and other tertiaries, in the early 1990s, the farmers were given the choice of taking responsibility for them, or having them removed at the OS expense. In this case the farmer opted to have it removed although it didn't seem to be in the way of anything.
