Fortified by a pint of beer and sandwiches and chips at the New Inn at Cropton, this was the pillar finale of a 6 day trip to Yorks and Durham. Used public roads to Stape at SE788935. What are shown on the OS 1:50,000 map as tracks through the forest are more un-tarred roads, even and pothole free, though a little gravelly. They are signed as permitted use for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Went West to High Muffles and turned North. The pillar is in open view as the surrounding trees have been felled. An excavator was removing the stumps leaving piles of earth. The area around the pillar remains surrounded by grass and would not appear to be under threat.

September Camp 2015: Goathland. Trig 2 of 2 on a 16 mile hike from Goathland. From Simon Howe via Wardle Rigg, Mauley Cross and Low Leaf House (disused). A lovely forest walk with a real sense of being in the middle of nowhere. Trig now in a forest clearing, a digger was working close to the pillar and we got a few strange looks as we walked to the trig but no opposition. Hopefully the Forestry Commission will leave the pillar intact. Return to Goathland via Grundstone Wath (lots of beehives) and Wheeldale Moor and lodge. Classic.

Turned L on reaching the crossroads on the top, 300m along the forest road, then diagonally back to the right for 100m along an ill-defined forest ride, then left for 50m through the forest to get to the trig. Found it easily without GPS but later in the year would be wise to bring GPS and the full co-cordinates.

Parked at Levisham Station and walked up the path past Rygate Slack and Middle Farm then onto the Stape road, continued on the paths to the west to Leaf Howe House and past the burial mound at Leaf Howe. These marked paths through the woods were very difficult with blown down trees and wet ground. I arrived at the trigpoint via the marked tumulus on the clear fire break heading northwest. For the return I took the paths heading west and south west towards the road near Hill Top Farm. This is a much easier way to get to the trigpoint, the paths being clear and through felled forestry. Stape has plenty of easy parking near the village hall. Donít go on the path at SE78252 94278 this is virtually impassable head for the path at SE78403 94543 if approaching from Stape. My route back to Levisham was via Middle Farm and Rain Dale. This is a difficult trigpoint to get to, I make it at least a mile from a made up road, but you could drive to High Muffles as suggested by Brisey. During my approach through the forest I could hear hounds barking in all directions I thought I was about to be run down by a baying pack but later I saw isolated hounds not at all interested in a solitary walker. A very interesting days walking, the trigpoint has no views but the two burial mounds and the deserted cottage of Low Leaf Howe are worth a visit.
