This one was well worth a visit, with the cliff edge topograph, the Devil's Chimney, the incredible views, and the beautiful multi-level scenery to admire. Oh, and a gaudily painted trig point, too. All very easily accessed from the wide footpath from the free car park. If only my visit hadn't coincided with a sudden squall - wind and rains spoiled what should have been the highlight of today's trigspedition.

My 25th extant pillar! Parked in car park to SE of trig near Hill Farm and walked along track to area of Access Land atop Leckhampton Hill. Pillar sits on top of a bank about 100m from the topograph where there are quite spectacular views of Cheltenham and beyond. Pillar has a nasty blue/green paint job and an asphalt plug. FB faces N. The west sighthole is open but all others are plugged. Position logged from GPS device accurate to ±5m. Close to the topograph is a rivet set into the Cotswold limestone (see log for TP7908). On the way back to the car I was assaulted by a small dog who gleefully ran down the path towards me, jumped in a puddle and then jumped straight at me!

The pillar stands on the boundary bank of an Iron Age enclosure on the edge of the Cotswolds to the south of Cheltenham. The trig is a bit battered on some of its edges and is mostly covered in peeling turquoise paint. It stands on a 2½ metre square base. It has an asphalt plug and FB S2432. My walk started from the car park on Daisy Bank Road to the north. Highlights included the inclines and kilns associated with the old quarry and the Devil’s Chimney rock formation. There are some very pleasant woods on the lower slopes of the escarpments. The views from the Cotswold Way on the top of Leckhampton Hill and Hartley Hill are fabulous. From the trig the view is mostly to the west over the Vale of Gloucester to the Malvern Hills and some distant, hazy, Welsh Mountains. Shab Hill is to the south and between the trees to the north there is a glimpse of Cleeve Hill. A glint of the Severn could be seen to the south west. The topograph on the edge of the hill has a stunning panorama over Cheltenham and Gloucester. Four metres to the west of the topograph there is a ten inch square block of stone or concrete on the ground with a small rivet sized piece of metal in its centre which may possibly be the weathered remains of SO92 T115 Bartlow non pillar trig. The hill top grass land, the quarry workings and the north and west escarpment slopes have been designated the Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common SSSI.

Superb spot on the top of the hill, although to get the very best views you have to walk 200 yards west to the 'Nixon' toposcope and then the spectacular view over Cheltenham can be seen properly. There is a concrete plug replacement and the pillar is painted a delicate shade of eggshell blue! There is a large chunk of concrete missing out of the SW/NW faces and the top corners are all chipped - this has been all painted over. The huge concrete base stands about 1.5 feet proud of the grass and seems re-inforced below that. Found a large clump of pyramidal orchids in the grass by the path! Great spot!
