Handy layby to the ESE. Good track initially, then up the slope. Pillar has some superficial damaged to the top, chipped edges etc and has no centre cap or plug, a Bhudda statue guards the open centre tube; LHD side sight hole open. Extensive panoramic views... not all good!

Good views but with the wind from the SW overwhelmed by that landfill odor (remembered from my time working on them many years ago). Shame about the smell and the plastic bags not caught by the perimeter fence because the views are generally good. Perhaps worth a 6 once the landfill is capped.

Revisit. Bit of a whiff for the adjacent landfill. The pillar is in good condition. The spider had tar plug which has now been broken open, and the centre pipe is filled with debris. The flush bracket faces northwest, compass measurement 309°. Vented through the left sight hole. The 360° panorama gives apsects to many known surrounding hills. Regarding the replacement flush bracket; this appears to be the original pillar rather than a rebuild, newer concrete around the FB gives that away. Flush bracket S2682 was either stolen or replaced for other unkown reasons.

First visit. To record the FB number. HISTORY The pillar was completed 24th August 1939 costing £5.2s.8d with its original flush bracket S2682. Computed as secondary triangulation station NT18/3 within the Dunfermline secondary block during 1946. For reasons unknown, flush bracket S2682 was replaced. The replacement flush bracket S9464 was fitted on 31st July 1963. The new flush bracket was levelled for height to first class precision, tertiary standards in July 1963. The Ordnance Survey records state that this pillar station was last maintained by the OS in April 1958, which was over five years before flush bracket replacement and final relevelling were undertaken. One of the thirteen early pillars built in Secondary Block NT18, the only non-primaries in Scotland at that time. The bulk of Sec Block NT18 was built in 1944.
