After reading logs, we expected this to be a pain to get to. But being winter, there were no cattle out on the pastures, so actually a pleasant 1km walk each way. Parked at the crossroads on the B road to the south, then up via the road/track to the east of Easter Cruicksfield and the big field.

Im sure on a nice day this is a nice walk and the views southwards are impressive. At the end of December after lots of wet weather the lane from Lintlaw farm was a quagmire & the gate into the "bull field" was 6 inches deep in slurry. Plus there were trees & branches down everywhere after Storm Arwen a couple of weeks back. No bulls & no cattle in the field, just lots of sheep today. No views to speak of today thanks to the mist. I normally rate the Borders trig walks highly but this one was a strangely uninspiring walk. Maybe I'll do it again sometime on a nice day & see what it has to offer. Slight damage to the top & the surrounding plinth is breaking up badly. The boulders placed around it to deter the animals from getting too close are a slippery pita to cross.

My second visit, slightly different route, which ended up a right palaver! Parked on the B6355 to the SE and walked up to the 'Bull Field'. There were clearly a lot of cows in the field, resting up by the wall that runs up NW towards the TP. So we hopped over the wall into the wheat field to the E of the 'Bull Field' and followed the field edge up to the small plantation. This hadn't actually got us past the cows, so we continued along E of the plantation where we went over another wall and into a rather overgrown break in the plantation through a gate into the field that is N of the 'Bull Field'...which was also full of cows! They started coming towards us but we quickly headed up through a gate into the 'Bull Field'. Whereupon the cows in the 'Bull Field', alerted by their mates in the next field, also came to investigate! However, satisfied we weren't intent on feeding them, eating them or mating with them they did what cows usually do, and buggered off. Leaving us to admire the excellent views S and return by the route we had hoped to use in the first place!

Second visit due to the cows and bull in the field last time. Parked at NT818578 due to the little parking space at NT819574 being churned up and deeply rutted (also a bit short on time today). No cows this time but plenty of sheep.

Parked at Lintlaw Farm and walked west along a track. Weather unpredictably very warm 16 degrees for February. Pillar situated next to a lovely white lichen stone wall and spider intact. Plinth is broken on SW base. Also the top part of the pillar is cracked. Fantastic views especially to south. The green pasture field is more like Telly Tubby land than a home for a bull.

Third visit. Comments from last visit of 2009 still stand: "Overall approach from east. Parked in Lintlaw. Walked mapped track to gate into trig field. The farmer said that April (2009 visit) was a good time to visit as the field would be populated with cattle and young calves in the following month. The trig column stands at the northerly edge of the grazing field. Cracks in top of pillar have the potential of becoming serious. The base has been reinforced at ground level to combat erosion by cattle but this in turn is starting to disintegrate. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. The flush bracket faces SSE, compass measurement 153°. Vented through back (NW) sight hole. "
