A circular walk with Hitman9956 around Windy Hill, which it was this evening! No problem as it's all open access but a weird local kept driving past when we were starting off and starring, lots of fences and locked gates to contend with which is annoying when the land is supposed to be in the care of a wildlife trust. But no real issues reaching here.

Parked by the road junction then up the fence line. Didn't see the quad tracks in the northerly field till I was at the trig, still came back via the fence line though.

Marked as Windy Hill on the map and it certainly was today. Not too warm either despite being the "hottest summer on record". Interesting structure just beyond.

From minor road to W, parking roadside near the 539m spot height at Scarsike Head. Followed N side of field boundary. Pillar has no top cap or plug; rear sight hole open, RHS plug degrading. Panoramic views.

Hidden at the junction of a stone wall turn and a mesh fence. Proximity to a gate shows evidence of farmers 4x4 tracks within 50cm of the platform. This trig shows remnants of white paint. For all those interested in mining plenty of exploring opportunities en route.

Parked at junction to W of pillar and followed walls to the trig. On the way back found a quad bike track which had a more direct line.

Open access land, with easy access from the minor road to the west. Take the left hand gate of the two by the road junction and you can follow the wall straight up to it with no wall scrambling required. Very boggy on the hill today, but fabulous views all around more than made up for the wet ground. Several other trig locations visible including the easily identified masts over on Collier Law.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 29th November 1951 costing £26.4s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY86/11 within the Hexham block in 1953. Levelled for height in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in August 1983. SITE VISIT: Easy parking on north verge by junction of roads at NY910413. Direct route to pillar is NE along road, through second gate on right keeping left (north) of boundary wall, all the way. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces 53° NE towards locked gate. Vented through SW and NW sight holes, innards filled with debris. 360° open skyline with the longest views to the SE over Weardale.

Plug intact; two sighting holes open. N side of wall sited close to a gate; presumably the trig was there first. Cloud slowly lifting.

good view of the off road section of the C2C cycle way over blotslaw...masses of bird life, curlew, lapwing, others i'm not so sure about!
