The undulating road in and out isn't the best - car nearly took off a couple of times. Pillar history: Built on the 30th of May 1953, at a cost of £31 10s 3d. Headed northeast out of Littleport along a ridiculously busy road and breathed a huge sigh of relief when I was able to turn off this road along the waterway. The peace and quiet of this lonely landscape was very much in keeping with this awkward to find pillar. Fortunately on this occasion I was able to mug up on notes left by previous visitors and knew it was located under a bush. Ah but which one? Luckily I spotted a trail through the nettle patch and I was there!

As we were heading for Suffolk this one made more sense. Today also marked Storm’s first 'proper' venture outside of Northumberland. Little Ouse reminded me a lot of TP 4096, ‘Idle Stop’, certainly the serene walk to the TP along a grassy dyke past bulrushes and willow trees; and like my visit to Idle Stop enjoying a delightfully warm afternoon of pure blue, cloudless skies. However, regretfully I can’t score Little Ouse as high as Idle Stop due to the amount of stinging nettles that had to be negotiated getting to the pillar...!

Visiting a friend in Cambridge who kindly decided to feed my obsession for visiting lumps of concrete. He'd done his homework and so, on the way back from visiting Denver Sluice, we parked up on White House Rd (opposite the bridge over the Little Ouse leading to Iron Bridge Farm). Having crossed the bridge we then walked NW along the top of the bank. Given the profusion of nettles below us I was not at all confident of spotting this one let alone actually reaching it. However, a very faint trod down the bank was all that was needed for me to spot it. Best guide though is to look out for an isolated group of three trees standing in the field below you, shortly after a right-hand bend in the river. The trig will then be found lurking in a bush at the foot of the embankment, directly opposite these trees. FB partially buried - had to dig it out in order to fully expose the number. Complete with original metal cap but top edge of pillar has a few small lumps out of it. Scenery rather flat in this part of the world but have awarded an extra point for the novelty of it being the lowest pillar in the country, the unexpected delight my friend seemed to share in finding this one and the fact it is my 250th extant pillar !!

The lowest (-1 metre) pillar. Situated below the floodbank on the Little Ouse, along the top of which runs a footpath. Nothing very spectacular, the main point of note is the severe lack of altitude.

The lowest trig! It took me ages to find this because I was looking on top of the dyke amongst millions of nettles. Ouch! Its in the corner of the field next to an elderberry bush. Plug with heavily indented lettering.
