ODP#13: short diversion from the ODP on a rather wet morning so no golfers about (although further along the path, the groundsman blowing leaves off the fairway into the rough, the point of which I thought a bit questionable?!). Between the rain showers this trig appeared to have some excellent views. NE and SE s/holes open, metal cap (shallow letters), vgc.

No golfers at all, might have had something to do with the big football day going on! Orchid hunt successful for 1 variety (early purple) but pyramidal and heath spotted not out yet.

The pillar is highly visible and reasonably easy to access. I parked near Fron-Goch to the south and walked up the lane/track to access the golf course. Pillar soon came into view and I made my way to it without upsetting any of the numerous golfers that were out playing their preferred game. Pillar in good condition and retains an original plug. A lovely all round viewing point.

The pillar stands on the edge of the 11th fairway of a hill top golf course to the south of Oswestry. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering and has FB S4720. The quarry below the golf course was reached by means of the disused incline from the kilns down in the village. Footpaths were used to reach the top of the hill. There is an impressive panorama from the trig taking in the Shropshire Plain, The Wrekin, The Breiddens, The Long Mountain, The Berwyns and numerous other hills of Mid Wales. The view westwards from the topograph near the cliff edge next to the 12th tee is particularly impressive. The hill has various ancient earthworks including the ramparts of an Iron Age hillfort and Offa’s Dyke. It is part of the Llanymynech and Llynclys Hills SSSI noted for its geology, flora and butterflies. The lime kilns and some associated buildings are Grade II listed structures.
