Here I am again, fifty odd years since my last visit. I took part in one of the very first Longmynd hikes as a callow youth. No I didn't finish. I gave up at check point 10 below Corndon Hill in the early hours of the morning, much to the relieve of the squadies who had been lumbered with me when we were grouped after nightfall. So, back again. We were staying in Church Stretton so walked up the (Shropshire Way?) path that traverses above the Carding Mill car park before road and path converge at the Information point. Oh boy! The car park was heaving. The info centre was choc-a-bloc. Yes folks it's school holiday time. We followed the well marked Pole Bank route with a diversion to the waterfall. (Worth the few minutes it adds.) But the crowds! They eased off after the waterfall as we left the rocky canyons and entered the moorland that felt very much like home, ie flat and featureless. (Hence the "average" score.) I suppose the views are extensive, and there's a good viewfinder. I would have been more impressed if I had been more familiar with the far off mounds. An easy. mostly crowd free route down and we were able to point some lost soles to the car park. I did offer a peek at my newly purchased OS Explorer map (I figured my 1960s One-inch Sheet 129 - 8/- - wasn't going to cut the mustard today), but was refused. "I'm not very good with maps." Sigh!
