Fascinating trig. Commands a wonderful spot high on the wilder moors with views in every direction. Sadly, the pillar itself is in a very poor state with extensive damage, cracks and vegetation. It has also sunk into the surrounding bog to the point where almost all the flush bracket is submerged. Parked at the large layby and stalked up through the patchy heather. Despite its poorly condition, some kind soul has very recently given it a coat of paint. I had to bail furiously to reveal the FB number but no chance of a picture. This one needs some major engineering works to salvage!

Day 12 of 13: A Bay to Bay Walk. Camped at the Lion Inn before leaving the masses following Wainwright to take the Lyke Wake path and solitude. I don't think I bagged this when I did the LWW. Thankfully the springy moor was dry for the short detour from path to pillar. Poor fella is sinking into the ground and quite damaged, but commands one of the highest points of the North York Moors. The moors take on a vast perspective from here, beautiful yet foreboding especially with the current extreme fire risk. Still after a detour to camp at Goathland, journey end now beckons for the Bay to Bay pioneers.

Ferocious Head Winds made walking very difficult – nearly turned back but the thought of easy conditions on the way back kept me going. Left the road at NZ69996 01913 (you could park here) looking for the tracks shown on the map going south to near the trigpoint – 4x4 tracks were visible in places but not much use – lots of heather and bogs to wade through. Great views – Roseberry Topping, Freeborough Hill and the Boullby Mine chimney on the coast. Returned to Ainthorpe on the east side of Danby Dale. A great 10 mile walk on Christmas Day – I didn’t see another sole and only two cars. Had a Cornish pasty for Christmas dinner – finished the festivities with a pint of Daleside Bitter in The Duke of York Danby – lovely.
