Asked permission at the farm and got the go ahead. Walked towards the telecom mast with some frisky heifers and then through the nearby gate into a silage field. Pillar still has it's angle iron brace on.Great views of the north Pennines (I'd come straight from the top of Great Dun Fell), but the pillar's position didn't seem the best it could have been, for a higher mark.

Parked at the cottages and walked from there. Pillar sits at edge of a silage field and has some angle iron attached to it, for what purpose I can't guess. Otherwise in good condition. Original centre cap retained, raised lettering; RHS sight hole sealed, other 3 open. Extensive panoramic views.

Driving from Rose Bank, decided to walk up through woods to northwest. No problems although there were pheasant pens and other ongoing works in the trees, so maybe just fortunate - it was 5.00pm in mid October.

Drove up the concrete track to the cottages and asked the farmer for permission. Go past the large white caravan, through the gate and left along the field boundary to the pillar. Strange clamps keeping the poor old pillar a prisoner.

Easiest access from NY658275. Take the path signed Kirkby Thore for 150 metres to end of track. Cross gate made of pallets then follow right hand edge of field to woodland block. Turn right through gate keeping woodland on left and left at end of field , still with woodland on left. Trig point is in next field on south side of boundary fence. There is a iron type frame around trig point. Also note that at time of visit there were crops growing in fields but by keeping to boundaries you can avoid trampling on any crops.
