(342) I set out from Beckermonds on a breezy, overcast day on a long undulating loop to bag Low Green Field Lings, Cave Hill and Cosh Outside. The first section was easy walking along the road through the partially felled plantation, and then as I passed Low Green Field, where the road dips south, there is an overgrown grass track with a locked gate. This was my chosen spot to head off-road and uphill. I nipped over the gate, over the low barbed wire fence and then uphill through an impenetrable spiky forest of sapling firs. Reaching the hardstanding midway up the hill, I then followed the stony track to a (unmarked on OS mapping) signposted bridlepath. This proved to be hugely overgrown and took ages to battle through before I eventually emerged approximately 1/2 mile south-west of the pillar. With stunning views over to Ingleborough, Whernside and Blea Moor, the pillar commands a fabulous, wild spot - well worth the fight to reach it. The trig is in a fair condition - it's got some damage and spalling, is heavily weathered and has a mortar cap. I lingered a fair while and then headed back south-west on the rough forestry track in the direction of Cave Hill.

A long & somewhat rough approach also taking in the Crag of Blea Moor trig but with easy lay-by parking on Blea Moor Road the B6255 at GR 76672 79364...Took the road East bearing right onto the Roman Road & left onto the Pennine Bridleway. At the 'fork', took the right heading for Cam Pasture & taking a right again at the fence, followed it for some distance before veering off left to locate the trig behind a broken section of wall. Etrexing back, just off the Roman & back on Blea Moor Road, about the mile post area on the OS map, went for a direct ascent of Blea Moor arriving at the fence at GR 77242 81521. Followed the fence up onto the Crag of Blea Moor & strode over it in close proximity to the trig. Descended SW to 'pick-up' the Dales High Way returning me via the viaduct to Blea Moor Road...32092 steps, 14. 6 miles taking 5 hours & thirty five minutes.

Bag this from Oughtershaw. We didn't! We parked up at the bridleway entrance just short of Low Green Fields House, and followed it round to the trees. Googlemaps shows a clearing of trees that passes through the forest. This is very slow going and disrupted by many fallen trees, sometimes easier to just go through the forest. Out of the trees a climb through thick heather leads to pillar. Great Views of Whernside and Ingleborough. Decided to follow the wall towards Oughtershaw and then passed through another clearing to get back to forestry road which was a bit easier, then back to car. Beer in The Board Inn, Hawes afterwards.

Dropped down from Cosh Outside to the forestry area and used the gravel tracks to approach the trig. There are plenty of 'Public Bridleway' signposts in the forestry area so walking through appears actively encouraged.

The style is visible but you need to cross over a barbed wire fence.to gain access into the forest. Path exists to join up with the forest drive to Low Green Field Lings. Much of this has been felled and some of these forest roads now bridleways. Also some paths now defuncted. Approached this pillar via a ride. This trig is over a wire fence and within a stone wall. Followed the forest track E, then up and W, before freestyling up through the forest and then W on wet tussocky moorland to the trig. Not a sensible route as the forest roads and footpaths don't seem the same as on our 2005 OS 1:25000 map and with no phone signal couldn't access an updated version. Wind-blown trees make it slow going through the forest. Returned by heading due S through the forest to the footpath/track junction, then SE through newly-felled forest to the road 200m W of Low Green Field. Much quicker, but still a grind. Best bit of the circuit was the hundreds of marsh orchids by the forest track on the way up.

SITE VISIT: Three trig circuit starting and finishing near High Green Field. Probably best to park outside (derelict) Far Barn at SD835796. There is no suitable parking offered any further up this public road, and doing so will result in a politely worded note attached to windscreen. Approached from SW. After bagging Cosh Outside and Cave Hill, returned via mapped tracks to SD822784, turning left (NW) following this track to SD833801, then left up through woods following remains of old wall until out onto open hill. Direct route NE along boundary line to top. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with concrete. Flush bracket faces southeast, ~138°. Vented through SW and NW sight holes. Full 360° open outlook. Retracing the final steps, returned via SD832804 following remains of old boundary wall SE down through woods and back to car. Found handwritten note affixed informing that this meadow is private, of SSSI status, and not to park there again.

This was my second attempt to reach this trig point. Last year I tried to use the footpath (not a PROW but shown on the map) from Low Green Field, only to be beaten back (!) half a mile into the forest by dense and impenetrable vegetation. This time I came up from Oughtershaw, using the PROW as far as the forest fence at Pewet Moss then turning right and using the 'corridor' between the ridge wall and the forest fence all the way to the trig point. Occasionally this proved to be very overgrown and waterlogged so I just hopped through one of the many gaps in the wall onto the open fell until conditions improved, then I returned to the 'corridor'. The trig point is in reasonable condition and there are some excellent views from it. The descent of Cam Rakes to Cam Beck and thence Cam Houses proved wet under foot despite a long period of dry weather - goodness knows what it is like in winter! There was no evidence of the entrance or exit to the forest of the PROW so I stayed on the open moor - more pleasant anyway as I find walking in forests to be very claustrophobic. As one correspondent states this is an isolated and difficult to reach trig point but as it is one of the 57 trig points sited in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, all of which I am pledged to visit, then I had no choice!

I came up from Cam Houses and followed a (muddy) track that ran up the moor with the woodland on the right (not the RoW through the wood.) When you reach the wall at the hill top turn left into a walled/fenced lane and follow it to the trig. The path through the wood at SD834860 is faint but OK and reaches the wide track at SD805834 but I couldn't find a route leading down to Low Green Field (as indicated on the OS map) so had to turn right along the wide stoney track to eventualy reach the track leading towards Low Birkwith Moor and ultimately Horton.
