Like others down the drive and asked for permission. A tantalisingly close trig to the drive way but these are always the difficult ones... wanted this as so few remaining to do in the area. Locals all friendly if a little bit inquisitive, it is a bit of a mixed area. Beautiful views to the arm of the Pennines: Freeholds, Scout, Wardle, Winter Hill sliding by distant, Blackstone Edge to the north. Wales a hazy blur beyond the glitter of city and town. Over the M62 back to Newhey seeing lands we've driven through for decades. Always gets exciting to actually walk it. Fab 3 trig log walk seeing favourite landmarks of the eastern approach to home.

'Down' as a cross for quite some time on the Manchester & Salford (Oldham, Rochdale & Stoctkport) 277 OS map consequence of inaccesibily some years back pre TrigpointingUK access by myself...finally 'bagged' today with website assistance. Roadside parked at GR 93356 13201 with, post short road East, a left 'taken upto the farm. Couldn't find a front door on which to knock to seek permission to access & rather than 'rat a tat tatting' on the patio glass, proceeded left thro' an open gate to the trig. Completed a 'circuit' of Hollingsworth Lake with partner Pam & post short walk along the canal by The waterside afternoon luncheond in The Waterside Restaurant...Nice food but a tad expensive for small portions!

(A tricky one to get to). I parked in a lane south of the pillar (west of Flash) and took the bridleway to a private lane next to a service reservoir/outbuildings. I then crossed two fields by an open gate and broken wall to the pillar. I must say it appears a bit forlorn. Gifted to getting back to normal, first fell race in 15 months and revisited Blackstone Edge pillar. Perfect evening and great to be back at the midweek races.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 28th May 1948 costing £15.1s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE02/T29 during 1949. Levelled for height to Class 1 precision at tertiary standards in 1962. Last maintained by the OS in October 1979. SITE VISIT: Approached from north, there may be better options given the distance from parking and cost. Parked in public car park at SD940153 which charges until 6pm but is free afterwards. There is no public parking any further south along Rakewood Road. Followed RoW network past caravan park, some misleading private signs to ignore. Continued along track until SD937139 then traversed up steep slope to higher level fields then followed boundary lines to top. Grazing field, unoccupied at date of visit. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre retains original OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces ESE, compass measurement 104°. Vented through NE sight hole, FB face sight hole breaking open. Full 360° panoramic view.
