Approached from east on A371, immediately south after crossing M5. At Hutton south again uphill along Canada Coombe. After about three quarters of a mile parking place on south side of road overlooking countryside to north. Just beginning to get light. On foot headed east, a little downhill to footpath, continued east for another seven hundred metres, then joined a track heading south and uphill. At a junction of three other paths headed south west along grassy track. After about two hundred metres went gate into field. Cattle pasture but none in the field at the time. Poor visibility due to drizzle but headed for higher ground and clump of trees. Thought I spotted it in there but it was a tree stump. Another couple of hundred metres south along field boundary wall. Cattle were in field to east. Didn’t fancy climbing over and walking through there. Then spotted pillar next to a bowser just on the east side of the wall and fence. No views at the time because of drizzle. Cap plugged. Raised S prefix.

Not sure how previous bagger managed to access this without a trespass. There are no public rights of way marked on the map and, from the West Mendip way, copious signage and barbed wire warning the public away. Didn't make any difference, just ignored them - perhaps we should lobby for a law that makes accessing all trig points a public right. Good views across the M5 to Crook Peak and Wavering Down (where we had just walked from). Pillar is in good condition.

Relatively easy to find from the West Mendip Way, however not so easy to get to. Farmer has invested in an abundance of barbed wire fencing and signage making it crystal clear you are on private property. Short of someone standing guard with a shotgun it is obvious the public are not welcome. No one about today except for two goats and a horse which were not interested in the slightest with me. Took my chance and got the bag. Sun was out after a rainy day, good views but very misty. On a clear day I think the vista would be gorgeous. Trig looking good except for cracks starting to develop in the top third.

The pillar is sited next to a tumulus close to the edge of a grass field. It has an asphalt plug and FB S//3248. I parked at Bleadon Hill and approached mostly by means of the West Mendip Way; the trees and hedges of my route were full of bird song. The hill top offers wide views. It looks down to Bleadon Level to Bridgwater Bay and the Bristol Channel and the Somerset and Welsh coast. The Mendips continue to the east from Crook Peak to Pen Hill and to the west to Brean Down and Steep Holm. To the south of the Mendip scarp Glastonbury Tor, the Levels, Brent Knoll and the Polden Hills can be seen. To the north several of the lower ridges of North Somerset can be seen and in the distance, beyond the Severn Estuary the outline of some Welsh Hills are on the horizon.
